Update 3/14/25: Reddit user Careless_Trash7702 was told that applications for the card will be down for 3-4 weeks while it’s being reworked. My understanding is that if you apply now they can’t change the terms/benefits for a full 12 months but YMMV.
File this under rumors, but a reddit user was told by a branch rep that they received an e-mail on Monday stating they could no longer apply for the U.S. Bank smartly card in branch and were surprised it was still available online (confirmed by another user). Another reddit user spoke to underwriting and were told this card would be discontinued in about a month. Another user was told that product changes were suspended. U.S. Bank also tighten the fee waiver requirements on the Smartly checking account and has sent out e-mail to some cardholders regarding business purchases.
For this to be true U.S. Bank must be losing a lot of money on this card already as the card was only launched in November, 2024.
