Southwest has announced that they were be operating flights to Cancun and San Jose Cabo starting from the 10th of August, 2014. Unlike other airlines where you pay a fixed number of miles to a destination, Southwest charges you miles based on how much the flight costs.
- Until 31st of March 60 points = $1
- After 31st of March 70 points = $1
At the moment it looks like Southwest will just be taking over the flights and routes that AirTran (who Southwest bought in late 2010) has, but this might be part of a bigger push into international flights in the future. Click here to view all the possible routes.
I’m glad that Southwest is finally adding these flights to their roster, rapid rewards are one of my favorite airline miles because of how few you need to travel and the fact that there is almost always availability. For those not worrying about the luxuries of travel, it’s easily the best rewards program on the market. Hopefully they continue to add international routes into the future.
One way flights to San Jose Cabo seem to be starting from $140 (8,400 points) from the West Coast and $300 from the East Coast (18,000 points).
Also just a friendly reminder that all the Southwest cards from Chase currently come with a sign up bonus of 50,000 points when you spend $2,000 within the first three months. Also remember if you earn 110,000 within a calendar year (including credit card sign up bonuses) you get a companion pass that allows one companion to travel with you for free (+ taxes and fees) on any Southwest flight your booked on.
