Southwest Will Start Charging For Checked Bags, Ending ‘2 Free Bags’ Policy

For years Southwest stuck to their generous policy of allowing two free checked bags on all tickets. In a major change announced today, tickets purchased May 28, 2025 and beyond will have to pay for checking a bag:

  • Standard fares will not receive any free checked bags. (Cost yet unknown.)
  • A-List members will get one (1) free checked bag.
  • Southwest cardholders will get one (1) free checked bag. (This includes up to 8 passengers on the reservation.)
  • A-List Preferred members will get two (2) free checked bags.
  • Business Select ticket purchases will automatically come with two (2) free checked bags.

This comes on the heels of Southwest cutting the points earnings on Wanna Get Away fares.
