Gas Points Details
Gas points were recently devalued on August 8th. Here’s the revised basics of the fuel program after August 8, 2016.
Every 100 points gets you 10¢ off per gallon at Shell, up to 20 gallons. If you have 1000 points, you’ll get $1 off. If you have 1500 points, you’ll get $1.50 off per gallon.Â
- Max discount in some areas is $1.50. In other areas, there might not be any max.
- You have 30 days to use the points. The day of purchase is Day #1.
- Points can only be used at partner Shell stations. You can redeem the points in a different area from where you got the points, but only if that Shell station is a partner. Check out the gas locator for Stop & Shop and for Giant for exact listings of which Shell stations are included.

- Points usually are available immediately, but I’ve had on occasion where it took a day until they showed up and were usable.
- Pro tip: Use a Shell gift card and you’ll usually get the cash price; it’s especially worthwhile to get the lower cash price when using fuel points.
Our Verdict
Personally think the $10 off discount is better, but you don’t have much choice as the offers are tied to your area anyway. It’s a shame about the gas point devaluation, but hopefully still of some use to you. Make sure you use a credit card that earns at a high rate on grocery store purchases.
Has anyone ever tried this in Queens, NY? I’ve checked the weekly ads and haven’t seen it.

Only restrictions are prepaids and Stop & shop cards.
That’s boilerplate language that comes with every gas points promo (other than open loop ones) – pretty sure the promo in any given week is only valid for the brands shown in the ad.
When it’s card specific, it usually lists the cards in the fine print IME.
I’m pretty sure that Blake is correct. I just looked at the Stop & Shop ad in my area and it says “these participating cards”. If it was for every card it would say “all gift cards” or something similar. They run these types of promos often where only certain gift cards are included. Sometimes Ebay gc are included and sometimes (like this time) they are not.
I am in CT an we also have the 4x offer. $10 is better than 4x after the deval.
@Anandh: 20 gals * $1.50 = $30. $30 > $10.
Wouldn’t you have to spend $375 in gc at 4X to get $1.50 off per gallon? For the Stop & Shop deal you could buy 4 $100 gc in separate transactions and get 4 $10 off coupons. Sure that would be annoying for most people but your math is still wrong.
