Uber Adds ‘Preferred Currency Pricing’ For International Rides; How To Avoid 1.5% Fee

Uber recently added a default built-in 1.5% fee for international rides and purchases to be charged in U.S. dollar currency instead of the local currency of purchase.

Someone who is paying with a credit card which doesn’t charge foreign transaction fees will do better changing the default feature and saving the 1.5% fee.

It’s easy to change by going in the Uber app to Account > Wallet > Set Preferred Currency. By default you’ll see the ‘United States dollars’ option selected, and you’ll want to change that to the ‘No Preferred Currency’ option, and then ‘Confirm’.

People like dishing on Uber whenever they can; I’ve done so myself for their other misdeeds. With regards to the currency conversion fee, IMO, it’s honestly not a terrible default setting for your average Joe who doesn’t necessarily have a credit card without foreign transaction fees.

Regardless, most of us are careful to use cards without fees when traveling abroad, and would be wise to change the default Uber setting to the ‘No Preferred Currency’ setting.

Updates:

  • Not everyone has the option to change the setting to No Currency Conversion. (Perhaps it’s currently only on iOS and not on Android?) I believe there’s a way to change it when you are actually ordering the ride.
  • My assumption that when choosing the Uber currency conversion you won’t get charged a foreign transaction fee isn’t necessarily true as it might still be billed as a foreign trip. Let us know what happens if you try.

I also don’t have that option, both me and my husband have the latest Uber app on iOS. We are going to UK in less than a week! Not sure what to do!

I don’t have it either, latest version on Android. If you don’t see it, you aren’t yet impacted, you’ll still be charged in local currency.

For BoA lifestyle credits, you may want to eat the fee and charge in USD. I am not aware of anyone who has had them post for transactions in foreign currency.

Lots of misinformation here about when FTFs are charged by card issuers. There is no one-answer solution. Amex, for example, does not charge FTF on USD charges made/processed outside the United States.

if you have US gift cards on your account it might not be too bad to pay the extra 1.5% but I don’t think it’s letting you charge to gift cards

No, you cannot. This “feature” is purely a cash grab.

@chuckisthe Uber’s website states, “gift cards can only be spent in countries that accept payment in the same currency that was originally issued”. So for now according to the terms, if you select USD in Canada, Mexico, or Eurozone you SHOULD be able to pay with a gift card. The only way to test this would be if someone in one of those 3 zones already has a gift card balance in USD and tries out the feature paying in USD.

Wonder if selecting the currency will allow it to use up the wallet funds in that currency. I had 0.60 GBP in cashback from booking a train ticket in the Uber app, would charging a US ride in GBP (and the remainder in GBP to my US-issued no-FTF card) have allowed me to use that up?
