Uber Plus Review: Pay A Monthly Membership Fee For Cheaper Rides

Introduction

Currently Uber is testing something called ‘Uber Plus’ (not to be confused with the old Uber Plus, that was for midrange vehicles between UberX & Uber Black) in select markets. Basically Uber Plus is a membership subscription service, you pay a flat fee per month and then receive discounted rides for that month. The exact details currently vary depending on the city you want to buy a Plus membership for.

Areas Uber Plus Is Operating In

Uber Plus is currently operating in the following cities/markets:

  • Boston: $40(2o trips)/$70(40 trips) for $2 uberPool rides
  • Miami: $30 for $5 uberX rides, limit of 20 per month
  • San Diego: $20 for $3 uberPool rides/$6 for uberX, limit of 20 per month
  • San Francisco: $20 (20 trips)/$30 (40 trips) for $2 uberPool or $7 for uberX rides
  • Seattle: $49 for $3 uberPool and $8 uberX rides, limit of 20 per month
  • Washington D.C.: $30 for $1 uberPool or $9 uberX rides, limit of 20 per month

Rules & Fine Pint

  • If your fare exceeds $20 for uberPOOL or $25 for uberX, you’ll be responsible for paying the difference.
  • Uber Plus is first come first served and enrollment is limited.
  • Surge pricing also doesn’t apply to any of the above rates.
  • It’s also important to note that Uber Plus only includes trips that fall within set geographical regions (you can see the regions for each city by clicking the links above).
  • If your fare is lower than the flat fare you’d normally pay, you’ll receive that lower rate.

Our Verdict

How useful something like this is really depends on how often you use Uber and what your average fare is. To fully maximise it you’d need uberPOOL fares of $20 or more and uberX fares of $25 or more. Let’s say you did that with San Francisco and pay for a 40 trip package, you’d pay $30 upfront and you’d save $18 per ride for a total savings of $720. Obviously that is huge, but it’s high unlikely that most people would fit into that category.

Easiest way to check would be to look at your rides from the previous month, seeing what the average price paid per ride is and if those rides fell into the geographical areas or not. Obviously you’re more likely to use the service if you have a membership like this as well. Let me know your thoughts on Uber Plus in the comments?
