The Fine Print
You can usually get a better than standard offer just by calling in, we detail that process here. Not worth doing unless you’re absolutely certain you won’t sign up for a timeshare and keep in mind this is what they do and can be very convincing and good at applying pressure.
Hat tip to FM
To the comment that said it’s a great deal because 3 nights is over $600, you can find Mandalay Bay, Bellagio for 150’s/night and MGM for about $50. TS are a complete sales scam. There s no “deal” here for the consumer.
I’ve done Hilton and IHG presentations over the last 6 or so years. Of the 2, IHG is the much more aggressive presenter. If there is any glimmer of weakening resistance they will use the stall, new-limited-offer, I’m not supposed to do this but you’re the exception, tactics. Be forewarned.
Marriott let me go as soon as I said I wasn’t interested, easy peasy. Hyatt applied quite a bit of pressure including getting managers and other sales people, despite having over 1 million Hyatt in the bank and never paying for a vacation.
I redeemed a better deal. $700 to stay on the beach in Waikiki along with 60K Wyndham points. Taxes extra. Waiting for a similar deal.
Renting is one thing but buying a timeshare is “real estate” for people bad at math.
I was actually considering the Myrtle Beach one as we plan to go there in the next year but it comes up as $249 and 15k when I click the link, and the most likely hotel is a La Quinta.
Are there La Quintas that are worth >$80 a night, even ignoring having to sit through the presentation?
Welcome back, Burton. No hard feelings?
Residents of the following states are not eligible to participate:
HI (Hawaii), MT (Montana), ND (North Dakota), SD (South Dakota), UT (Utah), WV (West Virginia), WI (Wisconsin).
wow what’s what about? those are unusual states to target
Guessing they have laws that are anti-timeshare.
I got 60k + 4D/3N offer for $279 last year over phone. Won’t do 2 hours of tourcher again.
Someone bought a timeshare and wants to leave it to me when they pass. It’s paid off in full. I’d have to pay maintenance fees which apparently I can pay with the points if I want to, presumably at an awful valuation. Is this something that could be a decent value proposition or do the maintenance fees and booking fees still outweigh the cost even with the timeshare being paid in full?
Bear in mind they’re usually lifetime commitments and if you inherit one you typically only have a small window of time to reject it or you’re now on the hook. I’d ask for any/all paperwork with the terms and conditions, be clear-eyed about what you’re agreeing to take on first. Can they raise the fees at any time? How much/how often? What are the costs to book (if any)?
The “buying” part is the cheap part unless its like a ritz-carlton type property. Depending on where and which weeks you can “buy” a time share for $0. Its the maintenance fees that add up. Is it work paying $1200 a year to go to the same exact location for vacation every year for the next 40 years. Or would you be willing to pay an extra few $100 to stay at a hotel in the area and not be anchored to one vacation spot.
I know several people that really enjoy it, especially when they have kids as it takes a lot of the mental load off planning a summer vacation when you already know where and when.
BUT….. they CAN be next to impossible to get rid of, and you will be on the hook for those fees until you do, which is why for 99.9% of people they should be avoided like the plague.
Just don’t.
When you go to timeshare presentations, are you required to feign interest to receive the discount, or can you go and just say “This is not in my best interests and I’m not interested and I’m not answering any questions.”?
I went to one timeshare presentation and they started asking personal questions I did not really want to answer. I had a sore throat though and requested to leave cuz COVID. They said “Well we’ll let you leave early and give you the discount because you might have COVID.” Found out later I really had COVID. I think I gave the timeshare people COVID.
So my Wyndham experience they were going to let me fast track out of the hour long tour if I just did a credit card app. Didn’t end up doing it because I didn’t want to mess up chances for the Business card (rip Caesars relationship so I would somewhat consider it now)
When I went to the presentation, there was no tour. It was a 30 minute presentation and then some dude started asking me questions about my lifestyle to try to manipulate me into signing up. I remember it as offsite from where I was staying. I had to go somewhere else.
Second prize is four nights
1st prize is a lifetime contract you can’t get out of lol.
And when you die your 6 closest next of ken all get to all fight over who get saddled with the burden
