  • Buy $100 Southwest e-gift card for just $95 from Paypal Digital Gifts on eBay. Limit 3.

Stacking the Deal

  • You will get 8% back in eBay Bucks if you were targeted for today’s offer, provided that you buy 2 $100 Southwest gift cards to meet the $100 threshold. If you only buy one gift card, it will be 6% back. If you weren’t targeted for the bonus offer, it will be 2% back.
  • Get 2% from the Shopathome portal, or go through Topcashback and get the 2% rate matched (see also Best Shopping Portal for eBay Purchases). You can even do better by going through a mileage portal and getting the holiday bonus offer.
  • You should get 5x points when you pay with Chase INK for Paypal Digital Gift purchases.

Our Verdict

Very good deal for flying Southwest. If you wanted to flip these e-gift cards, it looks like the only option is 76% with Cardcash which won’t end up any money. See our previous post for $66 reselling opportunities with Staples and Sears gift cards as both are still available (surprising to me).

Hi DOC,

When I try to buy 2 Southwest GCs thru ebay and try to log into Paypal I get a message that reads “Something went wrong. Please try to check out again (Error 70245).” But I was able to buy 1 Southwest GC with no problem. But, when I try to buy a 2nd Southwest GC I get the same message again.

What gives? Is PayPal only limiting people to buy 1 GC, even though EBay allows you 2. Or is this a YMMV-type of thing?

Chuck,

Thanks for the info. I’m not sure how much of a reference point I am (because I do little buying via Paypal and even less via ebay) but PPDG would only let me buy 1 $100 GC (for $95) a day. It was like clockwork…each day I would log-in, buy the 1 GC and then start getting the error message if I tried to buy a 2nd GC (Remember, the limit was 3 per person) or if I tried to buy 2 GCs in one order.

I know you speculated in the link that you thought the “hard” limit was $1,000 and the “soft” limit was $250, but for me the limit seems to be $100/day.

Totally bizarre. I now totally understand why everyone is so frustrated with PPDG and PayPal in general.

Thanks for the heads up! I want to fully utilize my companion pass in 2016 and we’ve already booked 6 great trips, using up my all of my point balance. Discounted 2-for-1 tickets sounds like a great deal as well. Got the 8% eBay bucks, 5x Ink, $5 off, and went through the AA portal for 1x and to help hit the holiday spend bonus. Great deal.

What are these gift cards worth if I book all my flights on points? I’m extremely interested in these gift cards because of the most recent Southwest holiday shopping portal promotion but don’t know how much use they will be to me.
