The Fine Print

  • Valid 11/4/15 – 11/17/15
  • Reportedly, they are valid for 7 days
  • Update: Reports in the comments indicate that variable load cards are not triggering this offer

Our Verdict

Safeway and Von’s carry $500 Visa gift cards and some stores allow them to them to be purchased with a credit card. Any purchase of more than $500 will need a managerial override. Also, the system may be hard-coded not to accept credit cards for purchases of more than $1,000 in gift cards (2 $500 Visa gift cards).

There is no mention in the fine print of a limit to the amount of $15 credits you can rack up; presumably, each unique transaction of more than $150 will rack up another $15 credit, although the credits will probably have to be used up in separate transactions.

Pretty good deal for Vons/Safeway shoppers if you have a credit card which earns bonus rewards at the grocery.

What’s the best way to liquidate the coupons other than reg spend? They expire in a week so I was hoping to apply toward another gift card (eBay, Safeway, etc) but registers seem to be hardcoded not to allow this.

I dont think there is one…I stocked up on a few items $15 off of $25 plus stack with coupons you cant go wrong with close to free food.

We just stopped at Safeway and did our regular weekly grocery shopping and bought 2 $200 VCG; those were the highest denomination VGC they had. We were initially going to get 3 but I forgot that a manager had to get involved, so I just got 2 and walked away with a $15 coupon.

I’m afraid that folks that go out and buy thousands of dollars worth of gift cards per single transaction are going to ruin it for the rest of us. It’s because of extreme greed that we’ve collectively managed to raise red flags with the credit card companies. Sure enough, they have been adjusting to make it harder for us to take advantage of these wonderful loopholes. I personally incorporate gift card buying to blend in within my regular shopping and fluctuate the amount of GCs I buy per month so as not to make it obvious I’m literally taking money from them. I don’t want to be on the receiving end of a financial review and possibly have my accounts closed because I went out buying $5 grand of “groceries” when I usually spend $400-$500 / month. Just a thought….

Hi Manny, did you purchase both VGC in the same transaction? TIA

Seems like it’s only in specific location. I don’t see it in San Mateo or Milpitas, CA flier

Safeway registers are hard coded to not let you apply these coupons to VGCs, So I have been buying >$25 of groceries plus another $200 VGC on each trip, rinse and repeat. I have used more than one coupon per day, but didn’t scan my card.

Trouble with this is the short redemption on the coupon of a week and the limit of one used per day. I used two one day when the checker failed to ring the coupon one one order and I had to go to the service desk to get cash for it. Now I have a second account for my spouse. That should help.

In my experience at Safeway there is no limit to how many variable GC you can buy. I usually buy $5000 in one transaction. I’ve asked if there was a limit, their response was “I don’t know, if there is we’ve never hit it” lol. YMMV

I purchased 2x $1500 VGCs at one SW yesterday (my highest total to date – for a single store visit). I preemptively asked a manager if it would be OK and if there was any limit. He replied that it was fine and that there was ‘no limit’ (other than what your CC would allow).

That said, however, I’ve found the higher the total, the more likely you are to raise concerns with over zealous cashiers and/or managers.

Variable loads are in fact excluded. The local Safeway manager had me file a claim with the marketing company they use for these promotions. They rejected me stating that variable loads do not count and indeed its there in the fine print. If you play dumb, maybe a manager will manually give you $15, but it won’t print out automatically.

Purchased 3x $500 VGC (variables) today from Safeway. No coupon was printed at checkout. Sounds like Rob (above) is right.

Got the same coupon from Albertsons the other day and (at least for me) they never make a problem buying $500 VGC with a CC.

Since Albertsons purchased Von’s its getting easier to shop there. I keep a receipt for 2k in vgc purchased from their manger in my wallet in case…I havent had to use it yet.
