The Offer

Walgreens $5 June

The Fine Print

  • Offer is availble for this week only (May 31 – June 6, 2015)
  • Vanilla Visa Variable load Gift cards are a part of this promotion with loads up to $500 with a $4.95 fee
  • Mention the ad and bring up a Walgreens gift card with you
    • Some Cashiers don’t know about the offer and if you make the purchase you without the Walgreens GC they will have to void the gift card transaction (which is actually possible, who knew, but something I would avoid at all costs)
  • Vanilla Visa Gift cards are generally not useful at Walmart (can’t be used as debit for transactions over $49)
    • Possible to use as debit card at Target
    • Pin is any 4 digits you choose
  • Limit 2 “deals” per person expect in NM
  • Some Walgreens may limit gift card purchases to $500 per day/transaction or not allow credit cards for gift card purchases at all, so YMMV.

Verdict

This deal has come around several times in the past year, just last month (May) and twice last year (August and October). This is a great way to subsidize your fees for manufactured spend ($5 gift card for $9.90 in fees for 2 $500 Vanilla Visa gift cards). The only issue I find with this offer is that Walgreens is generally more expensive, in terms of goods they sell, than my other favorite three lettered pharmacy. This means I am probably not getting the same value out of a $5 Walgreens gift card vs $5 extra bucks; that is unless I can convert a Walgreens gift card into something a little more useful (free lunch anyone?). If so then I would definitely get go for this deal. I will be maxing out this deal because I have some minimum spend to meet.
