$5 Walgreens Gift Card for Purchase of 2 Vanilla Visa Gift Cards (5/31 – 6/6)

The Offer

Walgreens $5 June

Direct Link

The Fine Print

  • Offer is availble for this week only (May 31 – June 6, 2015)
  • Vanilla Visa Variable load Gift cards are a part of this promotion with loads up to $500 with a $4.95 fee
  • Mention the ad and bring up a Walgreens gift card with you
    • Some Cashiers don’t know about the offer and if you make the purchase you without the Walgreens GC they will have to void the gift card transaction (which is actually possible, who knew, but something I would avoid at all costs)
  • Vanilla Visa Gift cards are generally not useful at Walmart (can’t be used as debit for transactions over $49)
    • Possible to use as debit card at Target
    • Pin is any 4 digits you choose
  • Limit 2 “deals” per person expect in NM
  • Some Walgreens may limit gift card purchases to $500 per day/transaction or not allow credit cards for gift card purchases at all, so YMMV.

Verdict

This deal has come around several times in the past year, just last month (May) and twice last year (August and October). This is a great way to subsidize your fees for manufactured spend ($5 gift card for $9.90 in fees for 2 $500 Vanilla Visa gift cards). The only issue I find with this offer is that Walgreens is generally more expensive, in terms of goods they sell, than my other favorite three lettered pharmacy. This means I am probably not getting the same value out of a $5 Walgreens gift card vs $5 extra bucks; that is unless I can convert a Walgreens gift card into something a little more useful (free lunch anyone?). If so then I would definitely get go for this deal. I will be maxing out this deal because I have some minimum spend to meet.

As long as they are both Vanilla Visa gift cards it should work if your store allows you to purchase more than $500 in GCs

Offer is not advertised or available in Detroit. Seems like not all stores are participating. Better check your local stores circular online before heading in.

How do you get the $5? Can I add any new $5 Walgreens GC to my order? Does the cashier need a special Walgreens GC or do it in some way?

Grab one from the gift card rack and make sure it is one with a low load limit of $5

Used to be that you could use the $5 W (Walgreens gift) card to knock off Vanilla GC fee. They now seem to have changed registers to disallow this since the last promo for this offer. Now I have to actually buy goods at these Walgreens. Grrr.

Possible to use Vanilla as a debit card at F. Dollar? I just happen to live next to one.

Yes it should work but remember the velocity limits are extremely limited so I would advise against more than one load at a time.

Even with your advice, I forgot to have the cashier do the gift card. The manager was very nice and just gave me $5 off the items I was going to purchase anyway.

That was nice of them. Yeah I had to void my transaction last time. Talk about nerve racking. Didn’t know you could void a GC transaction.
