The Mileage Plus Shopping app (MPX) offers free United miles for purchases at many retailers. The way it works is that at the time of checkout, either in-store or online, you make the purchase through the app and get free United miles along the way. Basically, you are buying a gift card to the store and then using up the gift card, but it’s all instant so you can do it at time of checkout in-store or online.
Note: Since you’re paying through the MPX system, this will count as an MPX purchase and not as an Amazon purchase for the sake of category bonuses and the like.
MPX now raised their Amazon rate from 1 mile per dollar to 3 miles per dollar.
Final Thoughts
If this offer were up any time of the year besides now, it would be interesting. Being that you can currently get 25% off Amazon using Amex or 10x points using Chase Freedom, most people be going for the 3x United miles. Still, heavy-hitters may find this interesting.
