BBVA Compass NBA Card Adds $5,000 Limit Per 5% Everywhere Period (For 2017 Onwards)

BBVA Compass offers the NBA card, the main reason most people hold it is because it earns 5% on all purchases two times per year:

  • During the NBA All Star Weekend
  • During the two weeks of the NBA finals

Previously there was no cap on how much you could spend and receive 5% on, you were really just limited by fraud holds and issues relating to when purchases actually post. Unfortunately they have now added a cap of $5,000 in spending per 5% period (e.g you can spend a maximum of $5,000 during the all weekend and another $5,000 during the two weeks of the NBA finals).

first 5,000

Prior to July 1, 2016, you earn 5 points for each $1 spent on net Qualifying Purchases during the NBA All Star Weekend and the two weeks of the NBA Finals. Beginning July 1, 2016, you earn 5 points for each $1 spent for the first $5,000 of combined net Qualifying Purchases made during the NBA All Star Weekend, and 1 point for each $1 spent on net Qualifying Purchases over $5,000 during the NBA All Star Weekend. In addition, you will earn 5 points for each $1 spent for the first $5,000 of combined net Qualifying Purchases made during the two weeks of the NBA Finals, and 1 point for each $1 spent on net Qualifying Purchases over $5,000 during the two weeks of the NBA Finals

In addition to this, you can no longer apply for the BBVA Compass NBA card directly through their website. You either need to go into a branch, or apply via http://ecredable.com/ (never heard of them before, though). Unfortunately the $200 sign up bonus is no longer available as well.

It’s also worth noting the new $5,000 cap goes into effect on July 1st and the NBA final series runs from June 2–19, meaning you’ll have one more 5% period with no cap. This card used to be a fantastic option, $200 bonus and two periods of 5% with no cap? Now that the $200 bonus is gone, card is really only worth signing up for if you can max out the 5% periods. I’d probably hold off until just before the finals to see if they add a sign up bonus again but considering they’ve made it impossible to sign up directly I’m not holding out much hope.

Can anyone confirm if the 5% during the finals runs from June 2nd-19th? The terms reference the two weeks of the finals, so I wasn’t clear.

Im stilling loading another $1000 a month into serve, so its not all about the 5% folks. Also, the NBA blows

Glad I got this card over Christmas 2015. Did most of my spend during All Star Weekend. Got $255 out of it. (No fees. Just paid my bills and expenses.) Still, a no annual fee card. $500/year is very good for a no annual fee card. Glad DOC talked about this card last Dec.

Well, still have the last opportunity to max it out this upcoming final week. Hit it hard, I guess.

$500 bucks a year? Yes, this sucks, but I am not mad. I’ll happily still take something as opposed to getting nothing

Yeah it is nice and all
but it could be exploited for much more than that in the past (though you were working for it with all the fraud alerts)

Looks like we got 2 finals and 1 AS weekend out of this thing and the MS hits keep on coming this year

I will repeat what I pretty much said on reddit that the card is worthless for me now. I am getting downvoted there. I guess the guys there will lap anything up. Two seperate $250 periods (-) $50 in fees and add in all of the fraud calls and BS = not worth my time.

Recently, I don’t think the fraud-alerts have been an issue for most.

They were for me over AS break. Handcuffed me from doing past 3k a day

It was annoying for me even though I already called prior to a large transaction(s) at CVS. Inspite of the FAs, I managed to squeeze $850 CB from ASW. I’ll work harder this June if it’s going to be the last uncapped, t’was nice of them that they will give us one “last” chance.

What 50 dollar fees? Mines no annual fee card

He is talking about buying Visa Gift Cards. So he’s complaining that he’ll only be able to buy $5000 in Visa Gift Cards, and that he’ll get charged $50 in setup fees, and he’ll “ONLY” make $200. To me, he’s coming across as very self-entitled. God forbid a credit card company not bend over backward to cater to somebody who is costing them money.

You’re not getting downvoted for your opinion on the card. You’re getting downvoted because you refer to yourself in the third person like a toolbag.

Does the 5% during the FInals go away once a team wins? i.e. if a team sweeps in four games, will the promotion end earlier than June 19th?

No. It lasts for the fixed period of the playoffs.

Well, it was good while it lasted. Although, getting back $500 a year on a no AF card is still a great deal.
