BMO Harris Shutting Down Diners Club Accounts, Having More Than One Card, The Psychology Of Bargaining & More

  • Why is BMO Harris shuttering Diners Club accounts? by We Fly Free. Disappointing for those who are having their accounts shut down, but hopefully this means BMO Harris are planning on opening applications again at some stage in the near future.
  • Frequent Flyers Should Have at Least One Card from Each Payment Network by View From The Wing. I don’t think you need to necessarily go out and apply for one card from each payment network, but it’s worth keeping at least one fee free account open to take advantage of these deals when they come along. Although payment network specific deals seem to becoming less common (apart from the Discover/Expedia deal that wasn’t advertised as such earlier this year I can’t think of any others in 2015).
  • The simple psychological trick to exploit when bargaining by Bite Size Pscyh. The psychology behind buying/selling/marketing is one of the most interesting things in the world. I was obsessed with this sort of stuff at one stage in my life and once you know what to look for you see different examples absolutely everywhere. If people are interested I’ll happily recommend a few books that tackle this sort of stuff in a lot more detail.
  • My Theory Of Getting A 3 Month Approval Cycle For Barclay Credit Cards by Chasing The Points. Definitely worth a read, nice little nugget in the comments as well. Barclaycard really just wants to see you put spending on existing cards before they consider you for another product.
  • Daily Getaways 2015 Deals Available for Viewing! by Mommy Points. As always, the stuff that is actually worth purchasing has a quantity of nothing. Wasted enough with this promotion in the past. I’m sure we will see a lot of chatter about these promotions as they come closer, but make sure you look at the quantity offered and the amount of hype on each deal. If you see thousands of people interested and there are only a few hundred on offer, chances are you’re going to be out of luck. Even worse is the fact that a lot of people have written scripts that will automatically purchase the better deals.

I was a Diners Club customer long before BMO Harris purchased them. My experience with them was horrible. After being a customer for 27 years, I made an online payment before leaving the country for several weeks. I was in China and had no access to email or phone. When I returned I found out that I had made a mistake when making the payment and it wasn’t posted. After I explained the details to BMO, they decided to post a 30-day late notice on my credit, thereby dropping my credit score by nearly 100 points. When I tried calling them back, they hung up on me. Who wants to be treated like this by a (service) company?
