Chase Freedom Categories For Q1 + Q2 Confirmed

This was originally posted on December 5th, 2016. We’re reposting as you can now see the 5% categories when you log into your account.

Last week user snorkage posted on /r/churning that they were told the Q1 + Q2 Chase Freedom 5% rotating categories. We’ve now confirmed with Chase that these categories are correct and are as follows:

  • Q1: Gas stations & commuter passes
  • Q2: Grocery stores & drugstores

chase-freedom

This also means there will be big overlap with the Discover it in Q1, with that card also offering 5% cash back (doubled for the first year) on Gas Stations, Ground transportation & Wholesale Clubs. Wholesale clubs will not earn 5% cashback continuing into 2017 on the Chase Freedom (that was a limited time promotion that will end).

I would have liked to see grocery stores and drugstores in two separate quarters, especially considering that it’s possible to get 5% cash back year round on gas purchases. What are your thoughts on the Chase Freedom categories for the start of 2017?

Im not impressed with Q1 categories.

The only possibility is: Costco card gives 4x points at Circle K and Food Co gas pumps. I will try Freedom next quarter and see if I get 5x.

Will keep you posted…

if I buy gift card from gas station, would that count as 5%?

Costco gas doesn’t count as a gas station purchase

I believe the Q1 ‘commuter passes’ bonus includes Uber and Lyft, so could be useful for many for organic spend.

Does anyone know if gas from Costco will count on Freedom Q1 gas stations category?

Commuter passes, I’m in New York so if 7-11 doesn’t allow CC for gift card purchases, I’ll buy $1500 value metro cards that can lasts till 2018! lol

Btw,
This quarter Nordstromrack.com doesn’t count for 5x because it posts as hautlookrack. So the only way to get 5x from an online purchase is to buy something, return it to store and then rebuy the same items on the spot.
What a pain. Chase doesn’t care to fix this.
🙁

a few years ago they had charities as an option. I wish they would bring that option back
