Chase Freedom Categories For Q1 + Q2 Confirmed

This was originally posted on December 5th, 2016. We’re reposting as you can now see the 5% categories when you log into your account.

Last week user snorkage posted on /r/churning that they were told the Q1 + Q2 Chase Freedom 5% rotating categories. We’ve now confirmed with Chase that these categories are correct and are as follows:

  • Q1: Gas stations & commuter passes
  • Q2: Grocery stores & drugstores

chase-freedom

This also means there will be big overlap with the Discover it in Q1, with that card also offering 5% cash back (doubled for the first year) on Gas Stations, Ground transportation & Wholesale Clubs. Wholesale clubs will not earn 5% cashback continuing into 2017 on the Chase Freedom (that was a limited time promotion that will end).

I would have liked to see grocery stores and drugstores in two separate quarters, especially considering that it’s possible to get 5% cash back year round on gas purchases. What are your thoughts on the Chase Freedom categories for the start of 2017?

Total crap, I guess I’m going the use the blank checks they always send me and do the investment that returns 10% annual.

And which investment would that be?

Which investment earns 10% annually?

Joel M.

Yes, please do tell. : )

Have any of you heard of REIT’s or Preferred Shares, and if you compound those returns you can make ~10% annually.

Most of those are also total crap, but there are a few that are really gaining steam.

I do CLM for the monthly Dividend, it has treated me well over the years, most of the cornerstone ones are winners for me.

This is a very dangerous recommendation to make in the current economic environment of rising interest rates, the average person doesn’t understand the implications of rising rates and how they impact REITS and preferred shares… what may have worked well for the last 5 years or so likely won’t work well in a rising interest rate environment… use caution, do your own research!

Also, how does this math work out for you? Interest is >10% on almost any CC, and the risk + taxes wash out any benefit for the few cards that will have less.

Of course, you can go balance chasing on 0% offers, but that’s a whole different kinda game.

No restaurants again. I guess wait till q3.

Probably will go with Discover since you can get your cashback each month without the $20.00 minimum to collect point.

Is there a list as to what qualifies as commuter passes? I want to say I saw a list somewhere, but not 100% sure.

Why not just buy Amazon gc’s?

last year amazon was 10x… where do you buy amazon gift cards at that rate?

NinjaX

exactly.

Right but 10x likely was a one time thing. 5x year round at amazon not a bad deal. Alternatively, if you have a supermarket in the area that does fuel perks they will run specials on black friday etc at 5x fuel perks which equates to 10% off plus credit card rewards if you utilize the entire 20 gallons…

Go to Costco, they sell their fuel at break-even prices (they are consistently 10-20 cents cheaper in most areas). Hell, you even get 4% back on gasoline at Costco using their Citi card.

Yup now with SallieMae being nerfed I’m really up shit creek with getting Amazon at a consistent 5%+

I could get the Amazon CC but do I really want to waste a hard pull and impact my AAOA?

One silver lining I suppose is the fact that you can find Amazon gift cards at grocery stores. Not sure about limits and circus tricks with denominations but it’s definitely an option. I just don’t want to waste an hour trying to buy Amazon gift cards to get that extra 3%+ cash back. At some point it’s just diminishing returns and isn’t worth it.

I don’t understand the reaction I’m reading at all. A quarterly category that gives 5% ON GROCERY AND DRUG STORE PURCHASES is a good deal for every single cardholder. It’s fantastic as far as I’m concerned. If 5% at the wholesale clubs is that important to you then buy COSTCO gift cards at the store now to.get the 5% on future purchases.

Who buys gas for X5 points?

7-11

I thought it was hard coded against credit card use even to buy a 7-11 gc. Did that change?

a few years ago they had charities as an option. I wish they would bring that option back

Btw,
This quarter Nordstromrack.com doesn’t count for 5x because it posts as hautlookrack. So the only way to get 5x from an online purchase is to buy something, return it to store and then rebuy the same items on the spot.
What a pain. Chase doesn’t care to fix this.
🙁

Commuter passes, I’m in New York so if 7-11 doesn’t allow CC for gift card purchases, I’ll buy $1500 value metro cards that can lasts till 2018! lol
