Citi seems to be a company with a mission at the moment and that mission is to gain market share in the lucrative credit card market. They’ve recently launched their double cash card, completely revamped their Expedia cards, announced they will offer free FICO scores to cardholders and all of this was on the back of a massive 100,000 mile AAdvantage credit card offer.
Their latest addition is less exciting, they have changed what the AAdvantage cobranded credit cards look like. In addition to this the public sign up bonuses have increased, unfortunately they are still at the same level as to what was available if you did a bit of digging (although the personal & business select cards now come with two Admiral’s club passes).
In terms of what’s important to me (and what should be important to you) how a credit card looks should be somewhere between last and dead last. Below is what the new Citi AAdvantage executive card (left) looks like compared to the old (right).
I personally like the changes, but as I said looks matters very little to me. Below are also the new sign up bonuses for each card, as I mentioned previously these sign up bonuses were already available just not directly through the Citi website.
- Citi® / AAdvantage® Executive World EliteTM MasterCard: 50,000 miles after $5,000 in spend. $450 annual fee, Admirals Club® Membership
- Citi® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® MasterCard®: 50,000 miles after $3,000 in spend, annual fee of $95 waived first year. $100 American Airlines flight discount every year & 2 Admirals Club® One-Day passes
- CitiBusiness® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World MasterCard:  50,000 miles after $3,000 in spend, annual fee of $95 waived first year. $100 American Airlines flight discount every year 2 Admirals Club® One-Day passes
Our Verdict
The executive cards are definitely not worth bothering with due to the $450 annual fee. The Platinum cards could represent could value if you get use out of the AA miles and the $100 discount, just think of the Admirals club passes as a small bonus. These bonuses are regularly offered, so there is really no hurry to apply.
Personally I won’t be applying for any of these cards as I already have a healthy stock of AA miles and don’t value them that highly. I’m really more excited for what else is in the pipelines from Citi. Personally I think the Hilton cards will be rebranded next, which will probably result in the reserve card coming with a statement credit along with the two free night stays. Hat tip to Miles to Memories
Ok. I just can’t seem to make up my mind on this. My wife got the exec when it was 100k. How long does she have to wait before she can get the plat sign up bonus?
8 days. They are different products and have no bearing on one another aside from general Citi rules.
$47000 question – does this mean we can get the bomus again if had it 12 mos ago??!!
Doubt it, it’s just a rebranding not changing from Visa/MC so would still be considered the same product. Happy to be proven wrong.
