Citi Retention Department Is Now Open Again

Recently the Citi retention department has been closed due to issues they’ve been having with the roll out of the Costco credit card. Reader Dadura let me know that Citi had now reopened their retention department and it’s now possible to call and ask for retention offers with Citi again.

[Must read: Retention Bonus Rules & Tips For Each Card Issuer – Get More Than One Bonus Each Year]

Citi used to be one of the best card issuers to get retention bonuses from but you should read these two posts first (and the general one linked above):

Here are some of the offers readers have reported recently receiving:

  • American Airlines Executive:
    • $50 statement credit per month when you spend $1,500 or more per month for seven months
  • American Airlines Platinum:
    • $95 statement credit after $95 in spend
  • Citi Prestige:
    • Additional 4 Citi ThankYou points on air & hotel spend

Feel free to share any other offers you receive in the comments below.

For my student ThankYou card, I got an offer for 5% back at grocery stores & gas stations. $25 max statement credit until September 30th. I also had multiple balance transfer offers.

For my Double Cash card, I was only offered a balance transfer.

2. $200 statement credit after spending $4000 each month for 3 months.
3. Additional 1 TYP for 6 months with a max cap of 50000 TYP

Citi ATT Access More:(annual fee will be billed in next couple of days)

Additional data points:

Citi Premier – One year old and AF posted
1) $95 statement credit after $200 spent per month for the next two statement periods, PLUS an additional 500 TYPs per month for the next sixteen months after $500 spend per month

2) $95 statement credit and 1,000 TYPs after $1,000 spent each month for three consecutive months

3) 5,000 TYPs after $1,000 spent each month for three consecutive months

I chose number 1, if nothing else I’ll get the fee refunded quicker and for only $400 spend. The bonus 500 TYPs each month are just gravy depending on my normal spend per month.

Citi Prestige – 11 months old
Since the rep was exceptionally nice, I went ahead and asked her if she could find any offers for my Prestige where the annual fee will post on 10/17/16.

1) $200 statement credit after $4,000 spend each month for three months

2) 4 additional TYP per $1 spend on airline, hotel, car rental, or travel agency spend over the next six months. Up to 35,000 bonus TYPs

3) 1 additional TYP per $1 for all purchases over the next six months. Up to 50,000 bonus TYPs

Number 2 was an easy choice since I put all my airline and hotel spend on the Prestige already for the travel protections and fourth night free.

Question though – I know that retention offers take one to two business days to register. However for monthly spend requirements does each 30 day period start on the day you register, or is it by my normal statement period (which is about 10 days in)? The retention rep I had repeatedly said it was by statement period but we all know to take a CSR’s word lightly. I’m hoping it really is by statement since I would have already hit the $500 spend for this month.

Called today on my AA platinum. AF posts in 8 days. Retention specialist noted that I was a multiyear cardholder, I’ve had decent spend over the last two years (10K-15K or so? – not sure) and my high miles balance (255K). Was offered a $95 credit (basically wiping out the AF) for $95 of spend within the next 30 days. I accepted the offer.

Will,

Any suggestions on getting retention offers on my Citi Forward card? The last time I used this card for purchase is on 9/4/15. I have been calling to get retention offer every 3 months since then and nothing so far. And they won’t event convert it to Double Cashback product. Any data point would be greatly appreciated.

Just curious what kind of spend you put on the Prestige in the past year. I put 10k spend & they said there were no current offers when I called to ask. A little surprised, but maybe you have a lot more than me?

Hunter,
I’ve charged local entertainment and international travel expenses mostly on the Prestige. My account still shows me as CitiGold eventough I closed early year. The retention dept still calls me a Citigold client if it makes a difference.

As these retention offers are YMMV, please try calling them after a while.
I had success with some offers for the Premier card when they didn’t have one 2 weeks earlier.

Good advice. First two times they didn’t offer anything or even offer to transfer me to retention. Yesterday the front line rep said I’m eligible to speak to retention. The retention CSR gave me all of the offers you had for the Prestige except the first one. I accepted the 10k TYP for 3k spend offer. Which did you take? And how do you get to retention each time you call?

2. 10000 TYP after spending $3000 in 6 months.

Citi Hilton Honors
1. 5000 Hilton points after spending $1500 in 3 months
2. 750 additional Hilton points after spending $750 each month for 18 billing cycles.

Shyam, could you give a ballpark for what you put on the AT&T Access More card? Keep on striking out with retention, which is a bit surprising since I put $40,000 dollars on the card in the past year. Both retention CSRs sounded surprised there were no offers as well. Would have loved that additional 1 TYP/ per $ for the next 6 months offer.

American Airlines Platinum:
$95 statement credit after $95 in spend

I’ve gotten this for three years running now. They offer it every time I call up to cancel the card. Then they give me 1K bonus miles for every $1k/mo I spend.

I must be costing Citi a fortune with the Prestige card. No retention offer. They probably want to lose me as a customer…

7500 miles for 1K spend on AA card

I got offered that, but you have to pay the $95 annual fee. Based on AA trashing it’s ff program, I would rather just save the $95 instead of paying more than 1 cent per AA mile.

You’re not really paying for the mile in that offer.. (Not like it’s a great offer anyway.)
