Ebay Officially Confirms Temporary Change in Terms, Won’t Work for Recently Purchased eBay Gift Cards

Sorry for the deluge of eBay posts, but a quick update: eBay has now made official the temporary change to allow their gift cards to be used to purchase third party gift cards, coins, and bullion.

No change was made to the official eBay gift card terms since this is just a temporary change.

A few notes:

  • The temporary change does not seem to be currently working to skirt the $2k/60 limit. Some were hoping that this is an error which will be fixed, but the official page mentions that there are limits (without saying the exact limits) in an apparent reference to $2k/60. It’s still possible that enough complaints will get them to raise this limit, but I’m not holding my breath.
  • The terms on the official policy note that this temporary change does not help gift cards purchased after August 23, 2016. This is because at that point, eBay had already changed the terms so buyers knew what they were buying and eBay is off the legal hook for those. However, a reader confirms that this isn’t being enforced. Update2: Being enforced now. Update3: Not being enforced for most people.
  • Confirmed in the official terms that this temporary change will end on October 13. The 13th itself should still be included.
