Noo!!! eBay Gift Cards have Volume Limits Again

eBay has now added back limits as to how many eBay gift cards can be used on their site. The max now is $2,000 per 60-days.

Here’s a link to the terms on eBay gift cards which were updated on July 15 (changes in bold, bolding is mine):

9. The Gift Card may not be used to pay eBay or PayPal service fees. The Gift Card also may not be used to buy other eBay Gift Cards or items generally considered to be “bullion” (for example, gold, silver, and other precious metals in the form of coins, bars, or ingots).

10. During the first 90 days after registering an eBay account, no more than a total of $1,000 in Gift Cards may be redeemed. For eBay accounts greater than 90 days old, no more than a total of $2,000 in Gift Cards may be redeemed over any 60-day period. Further, you may only redeem a maximum of eight Gift Cards in any single transaction (and fewer if you are redeeming Gift Cards in combination with other redemption codes, such as coupons or vouchers). Restrictions also apply to the purchase of eBay Gift Cards on ebay.com. See our Gift Card Policy for details.

And here are the old terms:

9. The Gift Card may not be used to pay eBay or PayPal service fees. The Gift Card also may not be used to buy other eBay Gift Cards.

10. No more than a total of $1000 in Gift Cards may be redeemed per eBay purchase. Further, you may only redeem a maximum of eight Gift Cards in any single transaction (and fewer if you are redeeming Gift Cards in combination with other redemption codes, such as coupons or vouchers). Restrictions also apply to the purchase of eBay Gift Cards on ebay.com-see our Gift Card Policy for details.

Two changes were added in the terms:

  • Max $2,000 per 60-days in eBay gift cards can be used. For the first 90-days after creating an eBay account, you can only use $1,000 in gift cards total. (I suspect this is to discourage people from creating multiple eBay accounts.)
  • Items considered as “bullion” can not be bought with eBay gift cards.

The new 2/60 limit will be enforced based on the eBay account, not the Paypal account, since eBay gift cards are now tied to the eBay account, not the Paypal account as it used to be.

It might not be a good idea to create multiple eBay accounts to skirt the limit. While eBay allows multiple accounts, they don’t allow it for purposes of skirting limits.

It’s not clear if 2/60 is being enforced yet or if the bullion exclusion will be enforced. I’m also not sure if we get to start over fresh now (since July 15) and spend $2k.

We’ll update the 31 Things to Know about eBay and Paypal to reflect the change in terms.

Update: eBay has changed the terms again and they now allow up to $2,000 per day and $5,000 per calendar month.

It sucks that they no longer allow bullion purchases with gift cards now. Now I have no use for Ebay again.

Bullion still seems to work for now. Also, periodically there are collectible gold coins which are not “bullion” but work for eBay Bucks purposes, and I would assume would work here too. Generally they sell for a 5% premium over the bullion-listed coins, which works OK when a 4X or 5X eBay Bucks promo is going on.

Also, the $1000 per transaction rule still applies. Applying more than $1000 in cards just leads to some cards not being drained.

This sucks. If It wasn’t enough the $1000 per transaction now you might as well get rid of selling eBay gc. There is no profit to be made . I hope it comes to bite them

Terrible. Just as terrible as it should be. And I am wondering if we can get rid of this limit with multiple ebay accounts.

Andrew

No, if they see you have more than one account they will permaban you.

Dan
Dan

I’m not so sure about this. I’ve been using multiple eBay accounts for years and I haven’t been banned. Even pay with the same PayPal account, so they should be able to see the connection, but no penalties yet.

Exactly. That’s also my practice.

Do you guys simply disable/turn-off Ebay bucks? Because I read that if you have more than one Ebay account in a household earning Ebay bucks then you’re at a high risk of being banned.

Hi Dan,

You use multiple accounts, exactly how many accounts?
thank you

Nice try, eBay.

if only i could hear the Filipino customer service accent… i guess the name Aloha comes close. Filipinos make up a large and growing part of Hawaii’s population… not surprised at all that eBay would read blogs and develop counter terrorist operations and strategies… sigh.. when will we learn? SECRET SOCIETY ONLY! CMON!

Don’t know where you’re getting your information from but its inaccurate. I wouldn’t recommend using the same paypal accounts but there’s nothing in the terms that suggests you’re in violation. In fact, ebay explicitly allows it.

http://pages.ebay.com/help/account/questions/second-account.html

“Can I create a second account?
Yes, you can, as long as you use a different user ID and email address. You might find it convenient to have a second account if you buy or sell a large number of items and want to organize them better, or if you’re buying or selling a completely different kind of item and want to keep your accounts separate.”

I’ve been doing this since the days of rolling $5k/6months without issue. I use my business paypal with ebay#2.

It’s been blocking eBay gift cards for me the last few days. Wonder if that is due to this..or one of the other “technical difficulties” that always seems to plague my account. With ebay gc limits, SVM raising their prices, PPDG essentially blocking me, and the GCR shutdown/scams…I think I’m done playing with gift card re-selling.

Multiple accounts are ok, just don’t buy the same Daily Deal with multiple accounts that are linked to the same shipping or IP address because they will ban you. They usually give you a warning first before a permanent ban. I got a warning and stopped doing that and haven’t had any problems so far.

Here’s a data point that suggests this hasn’t kicked in yet.

Here is how much I’ve used in eBay gift cards (I only have one account) for each day from July 15 onward:

July 15: $900
July 16: $0
July 17: $1,300
July 18: $600
July 19: $800

P.S. For the July 17-19 purchases I purchased all of the gift cards after July 15. I am going to be careful over the next few days to avoid having a surplus of unused eBay gift cards.

Update: I just redeemed $800 more in eBay gift cards today (July 21) without any problems

I wonder when this will officially kick in?

Gary and NinjaX,
It is funny how you guys speculate or even become suspicious that I work for eBay:)

I started reading this blog a couple of moths ago and started reselling gift cards about a month ago to get the extra cash. Yap I mailed $1000 worth of BP cards to Gift card rescue a month ago. I have not received the check yet, probably will never do…

I asked Dan about using multiple accounts because I just signed up for PO box yesterday to in order to have more than one ebay/paypal account to prevent my account from being shut down by using many ebay gift cards!
I heard that using too many ebay gift cards on one account raises a red flag even though I have been using ebay – for 98% of times buying things- more than ten years.

I seriously wanted to know how to use multiple accounts, and how many accounts they are talking about: is it 2 or 6?

Gift card rescue shutdown and ebay gift card limits are really bad news for me!

Even if people had methods they’d be stupid to disclose them in such a highly public area. Move along children, nothing to see here….

I have 12 sellers accounts and 6 buyers accounts.
I would have one account for each line I would sell.

Joe
Joe

Were the 6 buyer accounts used to get around the old 5K/180 day ebay gift card restriction? Did you also have to make 6 Paypal accounts for each of the 6 Ebay buyer accounts?

Chris
Chris

Ugh.. welp I guess that’s one way to get me to spend less money on eBay. If ebay is so against gift cards they should just eliminate them entirely.

Ebay is so annoying

Off topic- ebay account I rarely use targeted for 8% bonus bucks thru tomorrow. My active account was not targeted.

Chuck, what are you going to do with your $15000 Ebay gift cards?

Thanks for the update

and I just bought $1k in ebay gc from Best Buy using the Amex offer. Sigh, ebay keeps making it less attractive to buy from them.

Don L

Probably not a big deal, but I was able to purchase bullion today

Silver American Eagle coins (purchase of around $125) with Ebay Gift Cards.

Any update on whether eBay started implementing the max $2,000 per 60-day limit?

And is there any way to check how much eBay giftcards were used on your account?

anthonyjh21

Considering I’ve used around $4.5k in the last two days its safe to say the answer is no. That can change at any moment though.
