Our Verdict

Neither offer excites me that much; the fee-free Visa’s are $100 cards and limited to one per day and the market is flooded with Gap cards making them hard to resell.

What makes this deal interesting is that Kroger stores are currently offering 4x fuel points on all gift card purchases until 12/8/15. Fixed-denomination Visa or Mastercard gift cards are supposed to work to earn fuel points as per the terms, but it doesn’t always work in practice, YMMV. If you can get the Visa’s to work or if you need some Gap gift cards, this can be a great way of racking up free gas credits, along with the regular credit card points earned at the grocery.

To maximize the deal even further, remember that you can get free cell phone service with Kroger when you earn fuel rewards points; you don’t use up  points for this, this is an additional free benefit of the fuel points which you get besides for the free gas.

Does purchasing variable gift cards count towards earning fuel points?

yup, one time use (per card) ONLY. (and never mind that t&c verbiage about “one use per day.” Nope, it’s one use. full stop)

Anybody, anywhere … get more than one use out of this? (on a single card)

well technically if you went the dummy ID route you could do one more per day. It’s the fuel points that I was after. Looks like it’s one time use sadly.

and another problem with the “dummy” id route…. Kroger cashiers are required to check ID’s on any purchases above $100. (and they do record the #’s off that ID)

How do you get around that oh “fauxblogger?”

I used the digital coupon yesterday. The coupon says 1 per day, but I don’t see it on my account anymore. Is this one time use? Or do I have to wait 24 hours from the last purchase for it to reappear on my account?

I’m seeing that too. One time use and it disappears. Try to add it again from website and it says it’s already on your account but it doesn’t apply when you go to check out.

If you buy the fee free $100 VGC and then turn around to buy $100 of gift cards with that same VGC, you get 800 fuel points. Before I was close to a Kroger brand gas station, I would just buy the Shell cards which also give you the cash price at the pump (as opposed to the credit price).

They’re technically not supposed to allow you to do that. There’s some policy where there has to be a name on the credit card although that doesn’t seem to be evenly enforced anyway unless you’re buying larger dollar amounts and they verify the card.

Is FoodCo a subsidiary store of Kroger’s? There aren’t any Kroger’s where I live

Cool, so I should be able to purchase fee-free visas and earn fuel points at FoodCo then?

Great. I just purchased no-fee $100 VGC today at Kroger. I showed up almost 4-5 days/per week for VGCs and MOs at my Kroger since my daughter’s swim team is 1/8 miles from Kroger.

Along with other GCs I purchased the past week, I have accumulated more than 2900 fuel points. Not sure if I can use them all by next months. ( I will add another 1200 to 1600 fuel points for next few days if I purchase more $100 VGC). My daily commute is 4 miles round trip to my office and 6 miles round trip to my daughter’s swim team. Yes, I drive another 4 miles round trip to WM from Kroger once a week. RiteAid, CVS, and Staples are on the way to WM or next to my office.

My wife consumes roughly same commute distances like me.

My sister’s father in a law buys thousands of dollars in disney gift cards every year and just calls kroger to have them extend the fuel points. I am not sure if there is a number on the receipt etc. but it has worked for him.
