New Target POS Makes REDbird Loads More Difficult

Numerous Flyertalk reports indicate that Target is in the process of updating their registers (POS) and that this has been impacting the process of loading the Amex Prepaid REDcard, a.k.a. REDbird.

The most conclusive data we have so far is that under the new POS at some point in the load process the cashier needs to enter the ‘K8’ key in order to process the load. (This is reminiscent of the Walmart cashier loads which require the cashier to enter: 70 action code.) If the cashier doesn’t hit the K8 key then the transaction will get cancelled after you swipe the debit-gift card.

A few notes about this new change:

  • It’s unclear for now whether the K8 key needs to be pressed before swiping the REDbird card at all or if it needs to be pressed after the initial REDbird swipe but before entering the load amount. [UPDATE: FrequentMiler indicates that the K8 is pressed before anything starts at all.]
  • The difference between the old Target POS and the new one is described as follows: “Old version has the red spot logo and screen (something like that, I never paid CLOSE attention). New version has a house on the bottom right of the screen with a dominant white background.”
  • Under the new POS, reports indicate that the REDbird card needs to be swiped on the PIN-pad, i.e. by the customer, not on the cashier’s side.
  • There is a report which indicates that ‘real’ debit cards (i.e. Suntrust or any standard bank) can work on the new POS without the need for the K8 input.
  • The new POS apparently processes commands much slower than the old one.
  • Some mention that there may be a need to press K8 twice in order to get it to process.
  • Some mention a workaround of loading REDbird at the Starbucks register inside the Target store since those registers aren’t being updated yet. (Obviously, this idea won’t usually work since the Starbucks cashier won’t be willing to do it in most cases.) As an aside, you’ll apparently get 5% off using REDcard for ordinary purchases made at Starbucks inside Target stores.

Many of us already maxed out the REDbird toward the beginning of the month and thus the info on all of this is still a bit sketchy. We expect to hear much more about this when the limits reset in July.

A polite way of telling the Target cashier to press K8 would be: “Last time I was loading and we had the same problem. A manager came over and told us that we have to press the K8 key in order for it to work. A new update.”

Developing…

Two humorous Flyertalk notes on this developing situation:

  • “It’s as if all Target employees went to WalMart BlueBird policing training then returned to Target to practice their new customer service skills.” (link)
  • All of our manufactured spend problems now revolve around ‘Kate’ and ‘K8’. (link)

Hi all, I wrote a step by step guide on how to load gift cards to Redbird with the newly upgraded registers (K8): https://plus.google.com/u/0/+NoonRadar/posts/82eSPgNCGi5

If you’ve already loaded with the new POS, please take a look at my post and if you see something that I missed, or if you had a different experience, let me know via a comment there so I can update the guide. Thank you.

Still good to go in Atlanta. The cashier swiped the RedCard and asked how much I had on each card to load (4x$500). No questions asked, as always.

Just a data point:

I’m in California in Sacramento area.
The Target here apparently has upgraded their POS, and the customer service desk cashier knew what’s going on.
She had to play with the system a little bit, and quickly figured out about how to work with Kate.
I was able to load 300×1 and 100×10 VGC and MGC.

I can also confirm that the Redcard needs to be swiped on the customer side now.

Loaded myself 5K on two RedBirds at three different stores without any issues. Still old fashion way in IL.

It should not need the cashier to swipe the card for you. I load the redcard and swipe the gift card on my own one month ago. They also just asked me how much I want to load and I just swipe the card. After that, the POS wrote that ‘Input the PIN or if credit card press CANCEL'(not the exact same word).

If only this thing starts a few days after July 1st, cuz I’ll plan to load all my VGC tomorrow..

Fact that these changes hurt the usability of the Redbird for even legitimate users makes me think at the best they really don’t care about their product and at the worst they’re moving towards basically abolishing this altogether.

I kind of agree but why not just cut the cord now? If that’s what they want, just be done with it and write it off.

Or, it could be this:

“From what I read, this change came in response to the anticipated switch to chip cards and no card (Redbird or otherwise) can be swiped on the cashier’s keyboard anymore.”

Either way Chuck, it is a software upgrade, so I don’t think we can assume much from this technical upgrade whether Target cares more or less for Redbird as a financial product. Yeah they don’t train most cashiers on such changes, but I can tell you that they never did even before this. Source? Me visiting 15+ Target stores each week during the credit card days of Redbird. A frustrated supervisor at Target once confided to me that they just let them figure it out for the most part, as far as how to activate/load these cards.

One possible positive outcome, though not sure how likely… A few stores (mostly in big cities) won’t let you load a Redbird that doesn’t have your name on it. This is not hard coded, it is enforced by cashiers. If I was in one such place (I am not) when I load the Redbird with my girlfriend’s name on it, for instance, the cashier doesn’t have to ask for my ID to see that that obvious female name is not mine. With the new POS Redbird gets swiped at the customer terminal, as opposed to the cashier’s computer for current POS, so the cashier won’t have to have Redbird on their hand…hopefully some of them won’t enforce the “let me see your ID” rule in those locations.

agreed. I also have had select cashiers asking for ID with the debit card. They are rolling out new self service checkouts in Q3/Q4 at some locations. Might be a positive development when it happens.
