Recap: iConsumer Interview, WSJ About Companion Pass, Freebies, Amazon Refund Bonus & $500 Targeted Credit Card Bonus

  • The Surprisingly Easy Way to Score a Year of Free Flying by Wall Street Journal (Google the title to access the full article for free). They are obviously talking about the Southwest Companion Pass. Some interesting points below:
    • Southwest says it has no plans to change the pass
    • It’s a small percentage of customers who earn the pass, and most earn it with a combination of flying and spending
    • One customer needing points spent more than $1,000 on flowers at a Southwest marketing partner and had boxes delivered to Mr. Clarkson’s staff as a thank you
    • Any Southwest customer living in an Atlanta-area ZIP Code who registered for the deal and flew three round trips between Feb. 13 and May 17 got a companion pass for the rest of the year. Mr. Clarkson says the promotion was so successful the airline may try it in other cities
  • Can iConsumer really deliver cash + shares? My interview with iConsumer’s founder. by Frequent Miler. My personal view is that I doubt these shares will ever be worth anything, but fingers crossed they pay out. There is also a little bit of history/explanation about what happened with the eBay rates. Our review of iConsumer here.
  • Alliant CU Visa Plat Rewards Card, $500 Bonus (Targeted) by Danny Deal Guru. I wish this wasn’t targeted, I’d be all over it.

I just got a email today, saying get 1750 Southwest rapid Reward bonus if I spend $29.95 at 1800 flowers. I called and asked Southwest and they said the the 1750 bonus points would not work toward the companion pass. I thought I read somewhere that said even though they say no, they will apply.

I just met minimum spend on both the business and personal card for 50K each. Figured this would be great to spend $100 on flowers, score the extra points needed to get me to my 110k point.

Any info or personal experience would be helpful. Thanks in advance…Craig

Just to clarify, Giant Eagle is a separate chain (and much more limited, only western PA and eastern OH)) than Giant. Your recap makes it sound like you can get the deal at Giant too.

Thanks for the Alliant offer. I didn’t receive an email (not subscribed) but it allowed me to apply with the code. Been an Alliant customer for over a decade

In order to get the free item you have to be registered on their site. It only takes a minute because once you input your G.E. advantage card number most of the info required for registering is automatically filled in for you. Once you have registered you only need to go to the site once a week and activate the free item for your account.

In addition to the weekly freebie they have quite a few e-coupons as well. Both the freebie and the coupons are automatically applied at checkout as long as you use your shopper card and have activated them. The free item is usually worth about a dollar fifty or so. They have had a few worth around five dollars but it isn’t common.

H&R Block is offering gift card bonuses instead of TurboTax this year. Amazon and others are available.
http://www.hrblock.com/lp/refund-bonus/online.html

The best deal in my opinion for H&R Block is this one:
http://slickdeals.net/f/8394969-h-r-block-2015-deluxe-state-14-95-premium-state-24-95-premium-business-39-95-all-include-federal-and-state-free-efile?src=SiteSearchV2_SearchBarV1

It includes free federal and state filing for $15 including the tax software. In California I’d usually pay $20 for the State Filing fee so with software + free state filing, it’s cheaper for me than in years past with TurboTax.

I tried entering my info into H&R Block and TurboTax last year. It wasn’t as easy to use as TurboTax but it’s functional. IIRC, it ended up being the same amounts using both software.
