Rite Aid Goes Cash-Only for Loading Prepaid Cards (Serve, etc.)

Rite Aid is now hard-coded to deny loading a prepaid card with a debit card.

A number of months ago, Amex added Rite Aid to their list of partners where we can load their prepaid Serve card. Until very recently, the Rite Aid checkout system allowed the prepaid card to be loaded with cash or debit. While some cashiers may have been trained to impose a cash-only rule, many stores were okay with it.

In the past couple of weeks, Rite Aid enforced a system-wide rule not to allow the loading of prepaids with debit cards, and any attempt to do so will fail. This has been confirmed by a Rite Aid cashier in reference to a memo that was circulated, and confirmed by people who tried loading with debit, only to be prevented by the POS.

The new rule will affect Serve cards and any other prepaid card, such as GreenDot.

This change was initially reported on April 22; at that point, the reports varied with some saying they were still having success. But over the next few days, it seems to have been rolled out everywhere or most places. Let us know if you have any personal experience.

Its bullshit! I’m trying to get a gift card. I don’t carry cash on me.
This is total bullshit!! I told them to keep it and shove it up their ass. I’ll spend my money somewhere else.

I though FD and WM have stopped use of debit card loads to fund Bluebird and Serve. Am i wrong and they still allow $500 VGC’s to load Bluebird and Serve? Can you reconfirm FOR SURE?

There is a notice posted next to every cashier at RiteAid. Basically, the memo states that no GPR (general purpose reloadable) cards may be sold to any customer when the method of payment is a credit card. GPRs include Visa, Mastercard and Amex GCs among other things.

What about Vanilla Visas? My local RA told me and even read the memo to me. What they told me and I heard was cash only for any prepaid cards. This previously was a store that rarely enforced limits on me and has been very generous. I haven’t tried any other local stores but was trying to get others experiences. Thanks

My local Rite Aid also stopped allowing CCs for variable-load GCs (e.g. Vanilla). Saw the memo the cashier received.

Rite Aid offers little value for MSers … cash only for MOs as well … how about cash only for those LOW MARGIN drugs 🙂 … now on to the next helpful store!

What about the PayPal My Cash reload cards? Can you still buy these with credit or debit?

I’ve been told no, the rule applies to all reloadable. However, I never got a chance to try to see if that was hard coded as well.
