The Fine Print

Getting 25% back from a shopping portal at popular merchants is awesome, but of course you have to factor in the hassle of dealing with SYW points. Personally, it was never worth my while for a few dollars, but at $50 it’s tempting.

Also interesting is that Raise is one of the eligible retailers which makes it much easier to max out this promo by purchasing $200 in gift cards at your favorite retailer. See our review of buying gift cards on Raise here.

Update: Raise typically pays out only for new users (up to $1k in purchases). While the SYW portal doesn’t mention this limitation, it seems to be enforced nonetheless. Buying gift cards from Raise probably won’t trigger the 25% bonus for veteran Raise customers.

Is anyone else having trouble with the site not redirecting to raise (or any of their partners for that reason)?

About the Raise “update,” you observe that “Raise typically pays out only for new users (up to $1k in purchases) and that buying gc’s from Raise through the SYW portal “probably won’t trigger the 25% bonus for veteran Raise customers.”

I’ve been Raise for about 9 months, almost entirely to sell gc’s. (In that sense, I’d be a “veteran.”) BUT I’ve only ever bought only one $50 Sears card along the way. From that, would I still be a “new user” — (far less than 1k in purchases)

Is this spelled out anywhere in t&c’s for syw or for raise? Or is this just something you’all have discerned from experience? (glad we have more time to figure this out)

This hasn’t been extended, it’s a new offer good 9/17-9/23. And it’s important to note that the merchant list is different this week. It now includes Target and Walmart, plus other changes.

If you haven’t been burned by card arbitrage yet, count yourself lucky and don’t bother trying. Even if you use the cards for personal use, I’d still advise against preemptive purchases as you might not be covered after buyer’s protection expires and the cards on Raise have a pretty good chance of having been purchased fraudulently.

Jason stated they were for personal use and not gift card arbitrage. I really hope you’re not buying from one site and selling to another?

It’s always important to know the guarantee period (usually a few months up to 100 days) and use the card within that time frame.

I’ve personally had more issues with Raise when it comes to buying for personal use than I have other exchanges. A big reason I usually avoid Raise is due to the fact they’re not holding the cards. They’re basically the eBay of the exchanges, facilitating buyer and seller agreements. The risk lies in the fact that once a sale is completed Raise will verify the funds and instruct the seller to ship the card. Well, as can surmise. this provides an opportunity for the seller to use the funds. Sure, you could argue that on any site they’d have that opportunity if the card can be used online, but for some cards (like gas) they’re only able to be used in person.

Bottom line is don’t resell used gift cards and make sure you use them within the guarantee policy. Even so, the discount might not be worth the hassle but that’s YMMV and entirely up to you.
