Chase Will Allow Customers To Get Both Sapphire Preferred and Sapphire Reserve Cards

Starting June 23, 2025, Chase is changing the rules and will allow customers to get approved for the Sapphire Reserve card even while being a cardholder of the Sapphire Preferred card. Likewise you’ll be able to get approved for the Sapphire Preferred card while already being a cardholder of the Sapphire Reserve card.

Aside from the ability to get approved for both cards, as far as I know you would get the signup bonus when getting the second card as well, if approved.

However, at the same time, Chase is introducing a new system (‘pop up jail’) whereby they’ll give you notice of signup bonus eligibility. We discussed this more in this post. And so, in practice, you may or may not be eligible for the signup bonus, based on the bank’s determination.

Hat tip to VFTW

Likewise, customers can apply and be approved for the Sapphire Preferred, Sapphire Reserve, and Sapphire Reserve for Business cards. You can only get one of each of these cards.

Does this mean you can apply for a second CSR well? Or does it just apply to the CSP?

I just product changed to the CSR last month from the CSP. 😩 Do you think I can switch back and apply for the CSR?

I was told by a telephone agent that I could switch back at anytime but I don’t know if she was correct

If you are within 30 days I believe you should get back the AF.

Please help me debating whether a PC from Freedom Unlimited to CSR was a right move, or should I cancel the PC? After reading all the CSR news today, I thought of couple options: 1) Keep the newly PC’ed CSR, pay the lower $550 AF for one year and get the best of both worlds starting 10/26. Downgrade when new $795 AF hits and apply again for a new (possibly smaller) SUB; or 2) Cancel the PC and apply for new CSR on 6/23 to collect that “massive” SUB (only worth it at least 175K SUB in my opinion).

Making it harder to decide is the fact I am also eligible for the CSP bonus after 48 months in first week of July and currently at 3/24. With option 1, I could only get one future elevated SUB from CSP, but option 2 may give me two elevated SUBs but has a high risk of puting myself in Chase “pop-up jail” due to my pattern of churning both Chase personal and Ink cards.

This is a classic credit card churning dilemma, especially with the recent Chase Sapphire Reserve (CSR) changes! Let’s break down your options and considerations. Key Information from Today’s CSR News (as of June 17, 2025): New Annual Fee: The CSR’s annual fee is increasing from $550 to $795. Effective Date for Existing Cardmembers/Product Changes before June 23: For those who are existing cardmembers or apply/product change before June 23, 2025, the new benefits and the higher annual fee won’t go into effect until October 26, 2025, on your next annual renewal date after that. Effective Date for New Applicants on/after June 23: New applicants on or after June 23, 2025, will pay the higher $795 annual fee immediately and have immediate access to all new perks (except “Points Boost” which existing cardholders also get from June 23). New Benefits: The CSR is getting a significant overhaul with new earning categories (e.g., 8x on Chase Travel, 4x on direct flights/hotels), new statement credits (dining, StubHub, Apple services, Peloton, etc.), and enhanced benefits like IHG Platinum Elite status. Points Boost: A new redemption option offering up to 2 cents per point on thousands of top hotels and flights through Chase Travel, starting June 23. Points earned before October 26, 2025, can still be redeemed at the 1.5x value until October 26, 2027. Sapphire Card Eligibility: You cannot hold two Sapphire cards at once (CSR and CSP). To get a new Sapphire bonus, you must not be a current Sapphire cardmember and must not have received a Sapphire bonus in the last 48 months. Product changes do not earn a new sign-up bonus. Analyzing Your Options: Option 1: Keep the newly PC’ed CSR, pay $550 AF for one year, then downgrade and reapply. Pros:Lower First-Year AF: You’ll pay the current $550 annual fee for your first year as a CSR cardholder. This is a significant saving compared to the new $795 fee. Access to New Benefits (Mostly from Oct 26): You’ll get access to the updated CSR benefits starting October 26, 2025, while still paying the lower fee for this first year (until your next renewal after Oct 26). You also get “Points Boost” immediately (from June 23). Preserves 5/24 Slot: A product change (PC) does not count as a new account for Chase’s 5/24 rule. This is crucial given your 3/24 status and desire for future bonuses. Potential for Future SUBs: By downgrading after your first year (when the $795 AF would hit), you’d then be eligible to apply for a new Sapphire card (CSR or CSP) in 48 months from your last Sapphire bonus. This aligns with your CSP bonus eligibility in early July. Cons:No Immediate CSR Bonus: You didn’t receive a sign-up bonus by product changing. Waiting Game for New SUB: You’ll have to wait until you’re eligible for a new Sapphire bonus (48 months from your last Sapphire bonus). Risk of Smaller Future SUB: The “massive” 175K CSR SUB you’re hoping for is not guaranteed to return in the… Read more »

LOL…I was hoping for a human touch but thanks for a ChatGPT copy and paste. For the uninformed, you are now allowed to hold both CSR and CSP at the same time but the 48 months won’t be a guaranteed thing anymore as approval is now decided by some kind of Chase’s internal algorithm aka PUJ.

Why not keep the CSR until next week and see what the SUB is? You can always downgrade and sign up for the new CSR once the SUB is confirmed.

Currently in the same situation. Did you end up canceling the PC to CSR? Were you able to do it successfully?

Question: Do you think I should upgrade my CSP to a CSR before June 23rd? I recently applied for the CSP and have ~500,000 Ultimate Rewards points. Do you think I am better off (1) product change to the CSR and paying the CSR annual fee to lock in 1.5 per point redemption through October 2027 or (2) applying for the new CSR? (Of course, I might be able to product change to the CSR now, then close it in about a year, and then apply for the new CSR).

The dining credit is kinda fun as it justifies a “splurge” meal twice a year at a really nice restaurant. Sometimes I need excuses to treat myself.

I agree with you. I’m also personally valuing that credit as half of the full value as I would not normally spend at restaurants on the list in my area.

It’s not like Amex’s Resy credit which covers a broad range. I checked my area of South Florida and there’s about a dozen restaurants on the list, none of which I’ve ever heard of. I would have to drive in 45 minutes of traffic to use this. It’s totally useless if you don’t live in one of the cities on the list.

Try doing a couple of local searches. I live in Clark County north of Portland Oregon, and there’s nothing that shows up in my area with the Portland search. If I manually put in Vancouver Washington then a couple of options show up. Panning around on their map didn’t reveal any options north of Portland. Their search engine sucks.

I’m 5/24 until mid October, hopefully the massive SUB sticks around for a couple months

Depending on what “massive” is I may go for this for the first year. But it would have to be at least 150K.

Chase is speeding up its active decision to circle the drain. Meanwhile, Amex keeps pushing me more and more attractive offers. After 9 years, looks like CSR is finally leaving my wallet. Chase has completely stopped innovating, and their CC application/approval process feels more like proactively engaging with and giving away your information to foreign identity thieves.
