[YMMV] Discover Offering 0% APR For 1 Year For Existing Customers

The Offer

  • Periodically Discover offers existing customers special/bonuses but only when they ask Discover for it (2015 & 2017). Currently existing customers can get a 0% APR for one year simply by asking. The easiest way to ask is by starting a live chat and ask if there are any current offers that can be applied to your account. Not everybody will be offered it, but many will be.

Our Verdict

Previously when this worked other offers were also presented, I’m not sure if this will be the case this time or not as I was only offered the 0% APR offer as was reader Satya who sent it in and their friends who did the same thing.

I got in on this last year and the 0% promo period recently expired. Has anyone tried requesting it again for another year?

A follow up on my 0% promo rate:

This might already be a known issue with Discover, but I haven’t seen that topic discussed here yet…

I had to file a dispute against a vendor. Discover initially agreed with my claim, and issued a credit. Once the vendor got contacted by Discover, they agreed to refund the charges, with the condition I never used their site again.

Once they posted a credit, Discover reversed their original dispute refund, which I thought was good they stayed on top of it and I didnt have to.

A separate issue however stemmed from that process. The ‘reversed’ credit was applied as a new charge, which apparently didnt post at the 0% rate. Suddenly I’m getting charged a couple dollars interest, even tho I’m making my monthly minimums.

Called CSR and they refunded it, but apparently didnt correctly fix the issue, as it happened again for the next 2 months. The last CSR finally figured out where it was coming from this month, and feels they have fixed it.

I also got a notice from them a few months into ththe promo period, that my account had been accidentally granted the 0% promo, and effective XX date, all purchases would not qualify for promo rate.

Both cases where eventually corrected with persitant calls to CSRs.

Figured I’d share that with others that may run into something similar

I opened a chat using a link in this string, and CSR applied 0% on purchases for the next year. The whole thing took about 5 minutes total, super easy!

They gave it to me.

>The promotional rate of 0.00% will apply to new purchases starting 09/21/2018 through 09/21/2019 and will expire on 10/26/2019.

They didn’t give it to me. I understand completely why. I used both of my cards for balance transfers. I have 9 months left on both. 1 card with 3500 balance. The other with 4600 balance. I basically only did this because of an emergency at the time. I’m utilizing 30% of my credit too. I understand their reasoning entirely. They know all that because I applied for a 3rd card recently.

I was offered the 0% interest for 12 months. I pay my balance in full each month but I’m buying tickets for a trip to Hawaii and I can take a couple of months to pay them off and save the cash.

This only applies if you have an account over one year with discover. This is what the rep just informed me of.

Just got this. I think the jig is up boys.

Just got this in live chat

“Thank you for reaching out about your APR. We are aware of a post that was made on the internet that has gotten past around which is untrue. With that I would still be happy to review your account and see if we have any offers available.”

An afterthought on this CSR chat comment: I am surprised that a CSR is allowed to make such a statement to a random customer. They have no idea if you saw that post or any other one for that matter. Then they go so far as to say the post is ‘untrue’? Makes me wonder what post they are referring to and what they feel is untrue about it!

Yeah, I think I may have gotten screwed by this CSR too. Once he said that I had no offers he also said I’d receive a letter in 7-10 business days. So this guys chat is almost certainly been logged in the system.
