The Amazon Restaurants delivery service will soon close its doors, according to an email sent out yesterday.
On Monday, June 24th, Amazon Restaurants will close. You can place orders with Amazon Restaurants until 2:00 p.m. PST on June 24. After that, you will no longer be able to order from Amazon Restaurants. If you would like to view your past order information you can do so in your Amazon account under ‘orders.’ We’d like to thank you for being a customer and hope you continue to shop at Amazon in the future.
Sincerely,
The Amazon Restaurants team
It’s always interesting to follow Amazon as they try and shift around various services. There’s a lot of competition in the delivery space from companies like UberEATS and many more.
We’ve seen numerous deals from Amazon Restaurants in the past. A bit odd that – despite the impending closure – they are still showing a deal for $7 off your first order with promo code EAT7.
Hat tip to reader Dave
Promo code no longer available.
Must not have been able to find a cost-effective way to mesh package delivery with restaurant delivery. Kind of surprising, imho.
I knew it wouldn’t last. Been an Amazon restaurants delivery driver for a few years. Get paid $18/hour to sit in my car with occasional delivery.
A LOT of times I’d just take a nap while getting paid. They’d been scaling back service: got rid of free delivery after $20 order, then $35 order, then free delivery all together.
Yeah, I’ve been getting “your free delivery month!” Emails for like six months in a row.
Maybe if the restaurants went topless?
What’s an Amazon restaurant? Does this mean they’re closing the cafeteria at the Washington Post and in their distribution centers?

They’ll probably just buy Grubhub or DoorDash instead.
I love Amazon! Just ordered a kit to see what my blood type is at a reasonable price.
name of it please? thanks
I guess this isn’t surprising seeing as I’ve been a Prime member for a couple years now and have never even heard about this.
It was only available in certain cities.

lol!
How Amazon makes money is mind boggling. Delivering toilet paper to me Next day-whats the profit margin in that?
From what I understand of the company, achieving scale is their central strategy, sometimes to the detriment of profit in the short to medium term. Think Amazon rainforest… a forest so vast it can supply the entire planet with oxygen.
“Think Amazon rainforest… a forest so vast it can supply the entire planet with oxygen.”
I think you mean, sucking out the oxygen from all of their competitors.
The oxygen generated by the Amazon rain forest is completely used up by the wildlife in the rain forest. It does not supply any other part of the earth with additional oxygen. Just FYI
AWS is where they actually make money.
I thought they make most of their money through AWS and subsidies everything else with AWS money.
They originally built 100x excess infrastructure for their own platform to scale and realized they had excess capacity 9mo if the year they could resell as a consumption based shared service. That’s how AWS was born, recovering costs for their ecommerce business. At the end of the day, much of what AWS brings to table is still internally developed and put to use first with amazon.com. AWS has been a huge success, but it’s synergy with Amazon’s e-commerce business creates a positive feedback loop that is a huge competitive advantage.
By paying the manufacture less . They learned that from Walmart.
They are so big now that they tell you (the manufacture) how much you are going to sell your product to them for.
Do you know what a Prime membership cost? Do you know how many Prime members there are? Not only does it make money easily it’s almost a monopoly.
No one (here) knows how much money Amazon makes off of Prime members. Amazon has never released that information publicly.
Last year the SEC wanted Amazon to reveal to the public those numbers related to Prime members, but Amazon has this far fought against doing so.
Also, no one (here) knows exactly how many Prime members there are either. Amazon has said that it exceeded 100 million paid members (though doesn’t say exactly how much above 100 million).
They will lose money for some items but they will make you believe that they have everything and you will buy from them more usually
Your paying yearly membership for that!
