American Express Announces Largest Centurion Lounge For JFK Terminal 4

American Express have announced their plans to open a new centurion lounge in JFK’s terminal 4. Some key pieces of information:

  • Expected opening is early 2019
  • Lounge will be 15,000 square feet, making it the largest Centurion lounge
  • Lounge will be two levels with views over the airfield
  • Standard complimentary drinks and hot food will apply. American Express usually have a chef from the area design the menu, that is yet to be announced
  • There will be “special new features” these are currently unannounced.

The issue with any lounge at JFK is that the terminals are not connected airside so your flight would need to be out of terminal 4 to be able to take advantage of the new lounge. American Express said they chose JFK because that’s one of the top airports they see Platinum & Centurion travelers traveling through. Some renderings of the lounge below:

This will be interesting as both domestic and international flights go in/out of that terminal. I wonder if this will be outside of security then? I know there is an outside one at LGA.

Great news, but as you say, JFK is completely unconnected, so it’s of limited use.

There’s an airside shuttle to T2 operated by Delta, so in theory folks on most Delta flights departing JFK could use the lounge…

You can usually enter any Terminal with a boarding pass for any other Terminal in the US, so it shouldn’t be too difficult to enter if you don’t mind going through security an extra time.

>if you don’t mind going through security an extra time

For most people I’m guessing that IS a huge factor though. I want to get through security, chill in the lounge for 15-60 minutes depending on how fast I actually was then wander over to my gate after it’s started boarding so I don’t have to wait in the terminal.

If I’ve got to get out of the terminal, get into the other terminal and pass through security again and I’ve got to allow for the time plus a substantial margin of safety for potential hiccups along the way. That totally kills available lounge time and leaves me waiting in the terminal. Sure, if I’ve got a 3 hr+ layover it’s more tolerable, but then again I’d practically never schedule a domestic layover like that to begin with.
