American Express Business Platinum To Lose Four Benefits Starting In 2020 (Gogo, Boingo, WeWork & Premium Roadside Assistance)

The American Express Business Platinum will be losing four benefits starting in 2020. These benefits are:

  • Gogo inflight passes (current passes expire on 12/31/19 and no new passes will be issued for the 2020 year)
  • Boingo (members will stop working on 01/01/20. This was previously announced in March)
  • WeWork (enrollment will be available until 12/31/19 and after enrollment you get 12 months of access but it will no longer be possible to enroll starting January 1st, 2020).
  • Premium roadside assistance (will no longer be available starting 01/01/20)

You’d think they would replace the befits or lower the price…but nothing

veeRob

Cancel time.

yeah, I was going to cancel it next month anyway, so …

Dang. Was vaguely considering hacking the wework benefit (I work really close to one- free food!), just really no value for me at all these days in amex

What exactly does “hacking” mean in this example?

Mark

Turning up, stealing food and then leaving

They don’t have free food. Just free coffee, tea, and beer. Which, that’s awesome, but they almost never have breakfast or lunch.

But sometimes the offices/startups leave scraps!

I wouldn’t call coming in for scraps “hacking” lol

Today I learned I “hack” my parents…

That would not be stealing by any measure! You pay $595 for the privilege! Just make sure you cancel if you signed up cos after a year I believe it renews for a fee automatically!

I don’t believe it renews automatically or least that’s what multiple community managers have told me. Is that stated somewhere? WeWork doesn’t even sell the Global Access plan that is provided to Amex as a benefit.

Free food? The wework “near” me only had water and coffee. I have to spend minimum $5 to get there. They don’t provide office just a chair at a communal desk.

Completely useless. Do people at amex even think before giving out a benefit?

Is not this a library with a vending machine?

Weird, the ones near me always have the “phone booths” (yes, the ones where the toxic chemicals were discovered in the walls) available…

Yeah, AmEx is soooooooooooooo ahead of Chase.

Chase is going to give it to them in the next 2 years

They just added the damn WeWork membership as an excuse to raise the fee last year, WTF!

If this isn’t bait and switch I don’t know what is. Amex is giving us the dirty sanchez.

AMEX is going down the drain FAST! These cuts are simply ridiculous.

Garbage card

Disagree 100%
The 35% rebate alone makes me keep the card.

Steven

I used to value that rebate a lot but ever since basic econ got so widespread, it became useless because AmexTravel doesn’t sell basic econ, you end up with a much worse value than the fixed 1.54 cpp. Plus the rebate is restricted to 1 airline for economy.

I didn’t even know the card had this.. and I don’t have the card, but I still feel like I lost something today 🙁

…I thought they just told us that Biz Gold was losing roadside assistance, but Biz Plat was keeping it? Am I crazy?

YoniPDX

Personal Gold (too) been great perk for my eldest daughter at Uni, she locked her keys once, flat another time. Even better when bc AU $0 ~ CSR is an extra $75. *RIP* AmEx.

One can only assume we’ll be receiving reduced annual fees…..what, we’re not?!?

What useless credit will be put in it’s place?

$5 Macy’s credit every month when you spend $50+!

Those GoGo In-flight passes on long-hauls is what I’m going to miss. I don’t use the other three at all (though I’ll probably sign up for WeWork just because it’s complimentary).

Incredibility just logged in using my Gogo passes on a Delta flight to see…I’m losing my gogo passes in 2020.

This is the world we live in (ohhh!)

Increasing fees and decreasing benefits is possibly the worst customer retention & acquisition strategy there is.

It’s working fairly well for the airlines…

American Express called me yesterday in an attempt to sell the benefits of upgrading from the BGR to the Business Platinum card.

No bonus was mentioned, with the main point being the 35% rebate on points used to pay for airfare. When I mentioned how badly customer service had degraded over the last year with regard to dispute handling, the effective reduction in value I’ve already experienced with the Personal Platinum and the fact that I transfer my points for Business Class redemptions, I was told I could call back if I changed my mind.

One would almost think that Amex were trying to hook people on a product about to experience about of downgrades if they were sufficiently cynical!
