American Express Hilton Surpass/Ascend Bonus Increased To 130k Points & Free Weekend Night Certificate (Now Available Via Referral)

Update 7/21/19: This offer is now available via referral. Keep in mind that it’s no longer safe/working to do self referrals. Please do NOT share your referrals in the comments. Currently there is no place on this blog to share those links, but we will likely open a post when it also becomes possible to refer to the business increased bonus as well.

The Offer

Direct link to offer

  • The American express Hilton Ascend (formerly Surpass) has been renamed the Hilton Surpass card. American Express is also offering an increased bonus on this card of:

Card Details

  • Welcome bonus offer not available to applicants who have or have had this product or the Hilton Honors Surpass Card
  • Annual fee of $95
  • Card earns at the following rates:
    • 12X Hilton Honors Bonus Points at hotels and resorts in the Hilton portfolio worldwide
    • 6X Hilton Honors Bonus Points at U.S. supermarkets, U.S. restaurants, and U.S. gas stations
    • 3X Hilton Honors Bonus Points on all other eligible purchases
  • 10 free priority pass lounge passes
  • Complimentary Hilton Honors gold status. Earn Diamond status after spending $40,000 in purchases within a calendar year
  • One Weekend Night Reward at a hotel or resort in the Hilton portfolio after spending $15,000 in purchases on the card in a calendar year

  • Valid until 8/28
  • Free night exclusion list here

Our Verdict

Previously best offers have been 125,000 + $100 or 150,000. I’d say this new bonus is better than those offers, although I do personally find that trying to redeem single night certificates can be difficult. Although this one shouldn’t be too bad as it isn’t that restrictive and should work nicely for a romantic weekend (1 night) away. Same bonus also available on the business card, that would mean you could do two nights in a row. As always if you have any questions, read this post about American Express cards first. I will be adding this to our list of the best credit card bonuses.

Also in general American Express doesn’t match sign up bonuses, but you can sometimes get courtesy points. I very much doubt they will offer a courtesy free night certificate if you recently applied, but asking never hurts.

For Amex.

According to their terms for this card, gift card purchases are specifically excluded from earning points for the bonus, so they can claw back these points later if they don’t at first. But regular spending does not exclude gift card purchases from earning points on this card.

MS isnt dead for AMEX i use BF to GCM to MO all the time with 0 issues.

What is BF? I thought GCM for Amex was a bad idea and Walmart was the only way to go

BeFrugal – a cashback site.

Does the terms in your card specify the gift cards won’t earn points? I got a new Amex offer and it mentions that not gift cards.

Will I get free night for upgrade to surpass from NF hilton?

Are the 10x priority pass passes limited to lounges? Just wondering if it’s the same as their regular Priority Pass benefit from AMEX Plat/Aspire.

Yes. Major benefit cut.

Would Amex update the referral links we can generate with these offers as well?

I’m seeing this one under my referral offers (but not the business one)

business vs personal surpass, any preference? Seems to me the biz version requires 1k more spending, but it does offer the opportunity to earn another free night after 60k
spending. Though I doubt anybody would spend that much on this card.

Biz does not get reported to your personal Credit Report – major plus in my view. Extra $1K in MRS is a down side, but you get extra month to hit it. Also, I think spending $60K on that card does not make any sense… unless you spend it on Hilton properties specifically and get also 12x points on your spend.. otherwise I would rather spend that much on other card bonuses, or as a very least on a 2% cashback card.

Spending extra $11K (above the min spend) to hit the second free night would cost you $220 (if you compare with clean and simple 2% cashback), and spending extra $45K to get the third night on biz card would cost you $900 which can not be justified by free nights and even 45K Hilton points for me.

So, I would pick a business one if I had to choose, and would not go beyond the Min Spend.

My personal opinion, but everyone’s situation may be different.
Good Luck.

I had a Surpass card way back when, and got an email telling me to apply for 150k. I assume I’m eligible, since this is essentially Surpass 2.0?

Still not for biz card.

It seems like referral is YMMV. I tried referring myself for American Express Hilton Surpass card using my friend’s BGR referral but I saw old offer.

I’m getting the same problem trying to refer P2. I’ve tried referring from Plat, Gold, BBP, and Green.

Question: Why does the offer say that the cardholder receives Priority Pass Select membership PLUS 10 lounge visits? Isn’t it the membership itself that allows the lounge visits?

I was just offered the following:
“150,000 Hilton Honors Bonus Points after spending $4,000 in purchases on your new Card within the first 3 months. Plus, enjoy even more perks like the Free Weekend Night Reward. Complimentary Diamond status with its benefits, $250 airline credit, unlimited priority pass along with $450 annual fee.”
Any thoughts?

I have multiple Hilton cards that I use for referrals for my friends. Is there any way of telling which card the referral came from (for the 80,000 point per year referral limit)? I see two 20,000 point referrals in my Hilton account but not sure if I can tell whether they came from the Surpass or the Aspire.
