Does The American Express Platinum Earn 5x On MPX?

A new benefit that American Express added to their personal Platinum card is the ability to earn 5x Membership Rewards points on “5X points for flights booked directly with airlines or with American Express Travel”. On reddit somebody tried this on the MileagePlus X app and claimed that this was coding for 5x points, this was also covered by View From The Wing.

This purchase does indeed code as: “MILEAGEPLUS X, Travel – Airline” on the Platinum card. The problem is that it also codes that way on Premier Rewards Gold card (this earns 3x points on flights booked directly with the airline) and those purchases do not earn 3x points. I’d be very surprised if the Platinum card does earn 5x points, it’s too early to say for sure either way as nobodies points will have posted yet.

MPX purchases have been working to trigger the annual airline credit (before you berate me in the comments, if you think American Express doesn’t already know about this you’re delusional) so it still might make sense to make purchases through MPX – just don’t expect them to earn 5x points.

Just received my statement for last time purchased. In my case, there is no 5x earned when using Amex Platinum to purchased gift card on MPX. Game over!

My AMEX personal Plat statement closed yesterday. Last week, I made a $25 Amazon gift card purchase via MPX; the account’s pending points do NOT show 5x. And the points transaction list don’t show any bonus airline MR points. However, when I go to the AMEX Plat page, the MPX transaction has a symbol that indicates 5x MR for airline transactions. Do the extra 4x airline MR post at a later time?

I’m guessing that symbol uses different criteria, and the points will NOT post. But I guess we’ll only know for sure in a few weeks when the points start posting.

Great news then if they don’t earn 5x. Maybe Amex will keep allowing the app for the airline fee credit.

Amex already cut off 3x points on MPX with PRG without eliminating the reimbursement, so I don’t think there’s any reason to expect anything different with the new 5x for Platinum.

The first post here that I don’t really understand.

What’s the point of this post?

Hey, this codes as Airline, just like ages before, but I still can’t confirm or not if you earn 5x on those…?

Seems a bit rushed.

I think the point is to refute that MPX will code as travel for 5x on the Platinum. He’s just saying that while he doesn’t really care to try it out (or just hasn’t), he’s pretty sure it won’t work.

It has never worked for the PRG, so do you really think this would be different for the Platinum considering it codes identically?

Frankly I think it’s just a responsible reaction to the rush of blog posts (VFRW, MMS) that say you can earn 5x, even though with the lag of AMEX posting points, there has been no confirmation. History would actually suggest otherwise that the 5x won’t work.

Not rushed. I appreciate the post. I was thinking of getting the Amex Plat Pers due to thie 5x on MPX app. Now that it appears very unlikely I will wait.
