American Express Sending Out Statement Credits of Various Amounts and No One Knows Why (Uber?)

Update 9/17/19: Some people have received mailers saying that this credit was because Uber updated the app making it more difficult to use the credit offered on the Platinum card. Not entirely sure that is the same as this, as I think some people received credits on non Platinum cards and we had previously reported on other credits going out for that Uber issue.

Many people are reporting seeing a statement credit or various amounts appearing on their American Express statement today in amounts ranging from as little as $.05 to more than $50. No one seems to have any sort of explanation as to why these credits were issued.

I recall once getting one of these random statement credits from Amex last year, and the next day it was clawed back. That might happen this time as well.

Got a letter in the mail explaining the credit was related to Uber and some sort of difficulty I supposedly encountered using my credit one month.

I got 4x $50 credits on non plat cards and the weird thing is I indeed didn’t use my credit last month as Uber used my Venmo instead due to a Venmo 50% off promo. For ref I have every single Amex charge card and 5/5 slots. This was on 3 personal credit 2 personal charge.

I did not get a credit but a BCP renewal that was due this month, I got charged $11 instead of $95! Now I am not sure if I should downgrade or not…hopefully this will not come back to haunt.

I got one for $75 when I spent $900 on ski passes. The rebate says that Vail Resorts is the vendor of the credit. However I was due to get $75 back on my Surpass card as a retention bonus for spending $2K, so I’m fairly sure that the $900 spent at Vail was just the transaction that put me over the $2K spend.

Don’t seem to have any rhyme or reason to these credits, but it sure gets people talking about AMEX and their accounts. It seems to be a good marketing-advertising gimmick. As Inspector Clouseau would say…”The old AMEX Refund Ploy!”….

These deposits were seeing since yesterday accumulated $305,326.13, and is the result of a fractional penny shaving attack on AMEX’ accounting system that was supposed to go unnoticed for years, but Michael Bolton must’ve put a decimal point in the wrong place or something.

This seems like more headache than its worth if they claw it back and you don’t use the card enough to know

They must have missed my nine credit and charge cards. I don’t see any statement credit.
