Our Verdict

Keep in mind the new restrictions that don’t let you earn the sign up bonus if you’ve signed up/received a sign up bonus on Chase Marriott cards recently. Since Marriott/SPG became one program the only bonus we’ve seen on this card has been 100,000 points. Previously we’ve seen an offering of 35,000 SPG points (105,000 Marriott points), that offer was actually a bit higher than that though as the card earned 1x SPG point (3x Marriott points) so that would be another 5,000 points with the $5,000 in spend required. Basically the best old offer works out to be 110,000 points vs this offer of 90,000 + $100. This offer also requires spend at a SPG/Marriott property.

I think this offer is better than the previous 100,000 offer we’ve seen since merge, but not as good as the 105,000/110,000 historical high. The offer you prefer will depend on how immediately you need the Marriott points, if you’ll make a Marriott/SPG purchase in the next 6 months and how much you value Marriott points in the first place. Personally I think this is a competitive offer, but nothing amazing. I won’t be adding it to our best credit card bonus page. There is also an offer for 65,000 points + $100 on the personal card, that offer is a lot worse. As always if you have any questions about American Express cards, read this post first as they are probably answered there.

How can AmEx tell which purchases fall under/count as “U.S. Purchases for shipping”?

Couldn’t you just go into the bar in a Marriott property and buy a drink to trigger the bonus?

Would a $100 Marriott gift card purchase count to trigger the $100 statement credit, I wonder?

I signed up with the 100k bonus. Any chance Amex will match the new offer?

The old offer was actually sort of 120k, not 110k, since the 5k SPG points are 15k Marriott points (on top of the 105k that you got for hitting spend).

Is there anyway to create a referred link for this offer? Probably not.

I think both SPG offers are better than the 100,000/75,000 standard offers. The point value for Marriott is slightly below $0.01/pt. So $100 is worth more than 10,000 points. So the new offers are better than 100,000/75,000 offers.

Of course, you’ll need to get the $100 reward with the purchase. There are various ways.

hmm, this offer appears to not have the Marriott personal card upgrade language in it. The previous ones did I thought?

Sorry, maybe I’m getting confused between the language of the offers. In https://www.doctorofcredit.com/specifics-of-chase-american-express-limiting-spg-marriott-bonuses/ you specifically differentiate between “welcome or upgrade” offers for the SPG luxury,

Alas, I guess I will have to wait 24 months. Upgraded to the new Marriott card, cancelled the card when the new language came out. Chase still posted the 20k upgrade points to my account. Bummer
