Avoiding Fees
Essential Checking $4.95 Monthly Fee Non Waive-able
This is $6.95 if you don’t enroll in eStatements. There is no way to waive the monthly fee on this account and as such we wouldn’t recommend opening this (remember the account has to be kept open for six months which would cost you at least $29.7)
Choice Checking $9.95 Monthly Fee Waive-Able
This account has a $9.95 monthly fee ($11.95 with paper statements) but there are multiple ways to keep it fee free, doing any one of the following will do so:
- Have $750 minimum monthly balance over your statement cycle OR
- Have $2,500 minimum combined deposit balance on your statement date OR
- Make 10 debit card purchases per statement cycle OR
- Direct deposit $500 or more, either single deposit or multiple OR
Reward Checking $14.95 Monthly Fee Waive-Able
This card earns 5¢ for every debit card transaction you have. I wouldn’t recommend this account as it’s much harder to keep fee free than the choice account, plus Discover offers 10¢ for every debit card transaction. You need to complete all of the following requirements to keep it fee free:
- Make 20 debit card purchases per statement cycle, and
- A total relationship of a minimum of $5,000 in any combination
of personal deposits or outstanding loan balances, including
outstanding first mortgage balances
You can find more rewards earning debit cards by clicking here.
If you’re a student and under 24 years of age there is also the student account which is fee free. There is also the advantage checking account which a $19.95 fee and much harder requirements to keep it fee free which I wouldn’t recommend.
Early Account Termination Fee – 6 Months
The fine print states that you must keep your account open for a minimum of six months, I imagine if you close it before this time they’ll report a negative balance with ChexSystems.
Our Verdict
Because they accept phone applications, it might be possible to apply out of state (if you have any experience with this, please share in the comments section). This is a great bonus because it’s nice and big and the direct deposit is optional (although an ACH transfer has worked in the past). AnchorBank has offered promos of $100 & $150 in the past, obviously this offer is significantly better than that so I’d jump on this.
Because of this I’ve added it to our list of the best bank bonuses currently available, I’ve also updated our dedicated checking bonus page to include this.
Hat tip to churnbetter on /r/churning
I called the 800# to inquire on this promo. The rep immediately asked me if I was a WI resident explaining that I would have to travel to a branch bank if I wanted to make deposits etc. I told her I was an IL resident and that I would do all my banking online with DD. I asked her if I could apply over the phone and she advised me to apply online by navigating to Choice Checking. Not sure why she specified Choice Checking as there were other options as well. I asked her if there was a promo code I needed to use and she said no, as long as you apply by 2/29 the bonus will automatically be applied. She did ask me who she was speaking to which they may use to activate the promo but I’m guessing calling is not necessary. After applying, they will call you back within a day to finish the application process. At that time I will verify the promo.
Any update on this?
I was approved for the account and assured a $150 bonus. The bonus was deposited about 10 days after I pushed $500 from Capital One 360. I also took advantage of the $50 referral bonus by getting my neighbor to apply, who also received the $150 bonus pushing $500 with PayPal. The $50 referral bonus states that both parties would receive $50. I received the $50 6 weeks after neighbor completed terms. However, my neighbor was denied the $50 bonus since he already took advantage of the $150 bonus as explained by the customer service of the referral program.
My apologies. Disregard or remove my last post as I thought this was for Associated Bank. Anchor Bank did approve my application and verified that I would receive all bonus’s after completing terms. I pushed $500 from Chase checking on 3/2 and completed debit card requirements on 3/15. No bonus’s have been posted yet. I may try pushing another $500 out of PayPal.
Let me know when/if the bonus posts.
2/26 Opened account
3/2 Pushed $500 from Chase
3/15 Completed 10 debit card purchases
4/14 Pushed $500 from PayPal
4/29 $250 bonus posted
Chase and/or PayPal was recognized as DD
Updated the post, thanks.
I’ve spoken with some Anchor Bank (WI) reps as well. One can be a resident of a different state (well, at least MN) and still get the bonus, but the application should be done in-branch. Again, this is per a telephone rep after a lengthy convo. Could work well for those living close to the border.
Summary: You don’t have to living in WI to get the bonus … but if you don’t there, you will likely need to apply in-branch.
I live a mile away from this bank definitely gonna apply.
from their website:
Note: Checking products are limited to residents of Wisconsin, Illinois, Iowa and Minnesota. Loans are limited to properties located in Wisconsin, Illinois, Iowa, and Minnesota.
Not sure if this is being enforced for phone applications, but I’ll add it to the title.
