Avoiding Fees

Essentials Checking $11 Monthly Fee

Essential Checking account is required for this bonus and has an $11 monthly fee. The fee can be waived by maintaining an average monthly balance of $1,500 or more across your savings and checking accounts.

Early Account Termination Fee

This account does not have an early account termination fee

Our Verdict

Honestly one of the best bank account bonuses available. Slightly different to other previous offers as no bill pay is required and you need to direct deposit $500 and maintain $500 for 60 days. I’d say this new offer is better (now significantly better at a $300 bonus). Either way it’s definitely worth completing if you live in the target area. Just be wary because sometimes it’s saying that $1,000 deposits and $1,000 must be maintained for 60 days (and also sometimes showing the $200 bonus instead of $300). You should also be able to open via phone rather than having to go in branch.

Big thanks to reader, Vijay & Klad who let us know. Learn how to find bonuses and contribute to the site here.

  1. JohnB says:

When I click on the link, the graphic shows direct deposit of $1000 or more and the T&Cs state

“To obtain the $200 bonus, direct deposit(s) totaling $1,000 or more must be received within 45 days of account opening; qualifying direct deposits are Automated Clearing House (ACH) credits, which may include payroll, pension or government payments (such as Social Security) by your employer, or an outside agency.”

Still doable though for most people.

    • Thanks, added a warning to the top. Should be able to reload page until you see the offer I’m talking about.

    • brian richardson says:

the offer is better if you have the 1000 bucks to DD as there is no requirement to keep it there.

if i launch in incognito mode i get this: https://imgur.com/a/b0KYF

says 10 days after you DD 1000$ you will have the bonus posted. then i assume you can cancel without an early termination fee. FYI

  2. Occy says:

I can pull up an offer requiring 500 direct deposit and another for 1,000 direct as well. Can’t get the 500 regular deposit offer to show.

  3. Brad says:

I still have an offer I need to go in-branch for where I deposit $50 and get $200. I might as well do it, eat the fee so I don’t have to move money over, and close within a month.

  4. Mike says:

can you get this bonus if your wife/family member signs up? Originally I got the last bonus but want to know if 2 bonuses could be issued (per family)

  5. Brian C says:

In the zip code area it tells me they are unable to open my account online but they are happy to help me in a branch. Would this offer work in a branch?

Really sucks, i just confirmed there’s a branch 22 miles away.

    • Brian C says:

nevermind about the in brach part, duh, just saw the email offer

      • Mike L says:

Be careful with this… even though the online offer said deposits totaling $500 or more, the emailed coupon I got said DIRECT deposits totaling $500 or more. Just noticed the fine print in the email is different from the online offer.

        • AB says:

I played with it and I got the $1000 deposit offer to email correctly. The $500s always email as DD

          • Mike L says:

How did you do it? I’ve tried like 5 times now…

          • Mike L says:

The first section in the fine print says deposits, but the second section always seems to say direct deposit.

          • AB says:

Here is the text for my offer. Not sure if it is worth the 95mi trip each way into rural IL though:

Qualifying activity: 1.) have deposits totaling $1,000 or more made to this account within 45 days of account opening AND 2.) a $1,000 average balance maintained for 60 days.

Bonus/Account Information: Offer not available to existing checking or Express Banking customers or to those with a Fifth Third Checking® or Express Banking account that has been closed within the last 12 months. Bank reserves the right to limit each customer to one new account-related gift incentive per calendar year. Essential Checking account must be opened between 07/24/17 and 09/30/17. To obtain the $200 bonus, deposit(s) totaling $1,000 or more must be received within 45 days of account opening AND maintain a $1,000 average balance for 60 days. Bonus will be deposited into your new checking account within 10 business days of completing requirements. Basic Checking, Express Banking and Business Checking accounts are excluded from this offer. Checking accounts may have monthly fees. Bonus may be taxable as interest income and reported on IRS Form 1099-INT. Consult your tax adviser. See your banker for details. Not valid with any other offer.

note no mention if DD in that email.

  6. Ted T says:

Anyone ever had any luck calling to apply and getting the promo? I filled out my application and then after submitting it said it couldn’t be completed. Nearest branch is about 60 miles away.

  7. Db says:

Head’s up DoC. T&C have been updated to require a DIRECT deposit of $500. FYI.

  8. AE says:

Something must be wrong here – I have 8 branches within 30 miles of me and it tells me:

Unfortunately, we are unable to open your account online at this time. However, we’d be happy to help you in a Fifth Third Branch.

I will check back to see if they fix their online application process.

  9. AB says:

Oh wow all the locations in STL closed down. No wonder it wouldn’t approve me. Oh well.

  10. GM says:

I’m a little confused about the problems people are having in the comments above. When applying online it requires a $1,000 DD, not a $500 DD?

  11. Tim says:

I kept getting the $1,000DD offer even after refreshing several times. Copied the URL into incognito mode and the $500DD offer came up.

  12. Geo says:

I live in FL and attempted numerous times to signup online, receiving the error “Unfortunately, we are unable to open your account online at this time. However, we’d be happy to help you in a Fifth Third Branch” after inputing my zip code.

I requested a code via email, which also included a phone number to open via phone. I called that number, and they said they are unable to open accounts online or via phone in Florida and that I must go into a branch.

Just FYI incase anyone else is having this issue.

  13. Rajendra says:

So can I still fund this with my CO360 MM account to satisfy the direct deposit requirement? There are no data points in this post.

  14. stacker says:

If you are opening your account online make sure your previous account has been closed for 365 days to the day because the system will not tell you if the promo code is accepted before opening the account which is fucked up. Last year I called to close my account on 8/3/16 and apparently it was not processed until 8/4/16. Unfortunately I found out after opening my account today that the system rejected the promo code. So I had to drive to the branch to get them to apply the promo code. The banker told me that if you apply in-branch the system will let them know if you qualify before opening the account, so it is better to open in-branch if you are not sure if you qualify.

  15. Jay says:

Wells Fargo worked for dd for me.

I did this in branch last month in Fl with the previous offer. Took like 20 minutes in branch, just needed an opening deposit and drivers license, set up online access and everything, very easy. Bonus posts within a few days of meeting requirements.

  16. Ryan says:

How would deposits differ from DIRECT deposits?

  17. Krish says:

    Chase worked for me.

  18. doug says:

i funded $1,500 from my chase checking for initial funding. should that be all i need to do to trigger the bonus since it sounds like chase works as a dd?

or should i still do another dd since that was only initial funding?

  19. Mike M says:

    Opened account 7/24 in branch

    8/1 Bill Pay $11
    8/1 Bill Pay $11
    8/3 Bill Pay $11

    8/4 Payroll DD $100
    8/4 Congratulations here’s your bonus $200

  20. vj says:

Well im from GA and i have multiple banks close by. For some reason when i enter the zip code it comes back with error
“Unfortunately, we are unable to open your account online at this time. However, we’d be happy to help you in a Fifth Third Branch.”

Looks like i might have to walk into a branch

    • Mo says:

You don’t have to go to a branch. Just email yourself the code from the offer welcome page, then call to open by phone and give the rep the emailed code.

  21. HL says:

Took about 20 minutes over lunch break to get the account created with the promo applied and online banking set up. Their bank rep’s in the branch are on point
pushing money from Ally today. WIll update later to see if this meets the requirements for the bonus (mixed results on the direct deposit DoC page)
So just clarifying, we can close this once the bonus posts right?

  22. Kg says:

    Opened 8/6
    Chase push 8/10
    Bonus posted 8/11

Apparently, the 60 day account maintenance doesn’t really matter.

    • astoria26 says:

When your Chase push posted, what was the description? I just did an Ally push on Friday and it said “Web Initiated Payment At Ally Bank P2p”, not “direct deposit” or anything like that. Not sure if I should do Chase instead? Thanks!

      • Kg says:

Actually, it posted as Chase Ext Transfer. You might want to give Chase a try if you can

        • astoria26 says:

Update: I got the bonus today! So Ally push works, got the bonus 2 days later. I’m guessing any ACH credit counts, no matter how it’s coded.

        • Gerry says:

Chase funds pushed to 53.com and posted as Chase Ext Transfer, but other Chase pushes, their description was Payroll Deposit/JPMorgan Chase Ext Transf. BTW, 53 mentions that “qualifying direct deposits are Automated Clearing House (ACH) credits, which MAY include payroll, pension or government payments

  23. blue9 says:

Another dp of successful Chase push DD. Pushed a little more than $500 and bonus posted 2 days after.

  24. JVP says:

Has anyone closed the account right after the bonus posted and before the first 60 days? Did you keep the bonus?

  25. GLI says:

No more online application – must email and go to branch with the coupon

  26. Mike M says:

JVP, I closed the account a couple days after I received the bonus in branch. The banker got a little snippy with me and flat out asked if I only opened the account for the bonus (which I answered no). She also said to herself out loud if there was a termination fee for closing an account so fast (there isn’t and I already knew there wasn’t).

A little uncomfortable but I did walk out with bonus in hand.

  27. LotusB says:

Yep, like GLI said, no more online application – take your code and redeem in-branch only.

The link will still take you through an online application, and once you fill it in – and hit the submit button, a message appears and tells you it cannot be processed and you need to go to a branch.

    • Has anybody been succesful at all? I know Fifth Third has done in branch only offers previously but it was always clearly stated so I wonder if this is just some type of bug.

      • Mo says:

Why does everyone keep saying must go in branch when I wrote up above that you can simply email yourself the code, then call in to open by phone, which I’ve done.

  28. GM says:

    DP:

    Pushed $1,000 from Citizen’s Acct
    Bonus Posted 5 days later

  29. Mark says:

I transferred $601 ACH from TD Ameritrade, $1550 from Discover Bank and $101 from Paypal over the past 6 weeks, did a handful of bill pays and still have no bonus…

    Is there any hope here?

    • Andrew says:

Just curious – did your bonus ever post? I completed all requirements more than a month ago and haven’t seen anything either. Here’s hoping!

      Thanks

      • Mark says:

No bonus. Just did another $515 from Paypal as a last ditch effort. I’ll keep the account open 90 days just in case.

        • Andrew says:

Just wanted to report back that my $200 bonus posted on 10/6. I had pushed $1000 and $500 by Schwab, $500 by Paypal, and $1000 by JP Morgan. The last push to JP Morgan was back on 9/12, so the bonus did not post for me immediately after a push (rather 3 weeks after the last push).

  30. Tim says:

Got a $200 offer for $500+ DD to show after refreshing several times. $1,500.00 minimum to keep fee-free. Minimum # of days to keep account open not stated in T&C. Couldn’t open account online or by phone (no new accounts by phone or online is specific to FL according to the CSR). Opened Essentials Checking in branch on 8/18 with $60.00. Pushed $501.00 from Cap One 360 Savings on 8/24. Bonus posted on 8/25, less $56.00 withholding for taxes, according to the transaction description. I haven’t had any bank withhold taxes from my bonus before. Is that normal for some banks? Funny thing is, they withheld the equivalent of 28%, which is double my tax bracket!!!

    • Amy says:

That’s interesting, because just today I received a thick stack of tax papers from Citibank which referenced this very thing. The letter says I have to provide them with my Taxpayer Identification Number (SSN)–something which I thought I would have already provided them when I applied, but I don’t recall for certain–or else my account “will remain uncertified and will be subject to backup withholding, which requires that we withhold 28% of reportable interest and other income credited to the account” (under which I’m assuming the bonus falls). I’ve also never experienced this with any other bank.

      • Tim says:

I spoke with a 5/3 CSR today, who explained that when I opened the account, the box was checked (by them) to withhold tax for any promotional payments. The default is 28%. They supposedly asked me if I wanted them to do that, but I don’t recall getting that question during opening. They said the money is with the IRS, and it’ll be applied to any tax I owe, or returned if I’m owed a refund.

  31. gerry says:

Opened account 8-21-17 online with emailed code. Pushed Chase $530.53, posted on 8-25-17 and bonus $200 posed 8-28-17. The external transfer fee of $3 is troublesome, I guess will just need to pull funds out. Zelle is not available for first month. Also, checks made out to yourself is not allowed via mobile deposit. Rep mentioned that people wrote checks to themselves from closed accounts and the $100 automatically available was taken out via ATM. Probably not something last too long if you are burning banks around town.

  32. Rena says:

I went with the $1000 dd for $200 since that one looks to be the fastest; when I opened the account in branch, the rep mentioned that people just do 1000 venmo and the bonus usually posts in 2 days (no, I didn’t ask).

  33. Dave says:

Anybody else having trouble at the “Customer Agreements” page, where it won’t let you move on? I can’t open the 1st three links, only “Offer Terms & Conditions” opens, and I’m thinking it won’t let you past this step until all have been viewed. I’ve tried different browsers, etc.

  34. Jack says:

Rejected due to “info in my Chex report.” have opened 4 bank accounts in the last month, doesn’t seem like it would make sense for them to reject me just for that. Regardless, this might be a DP that they’re Chex sensitive?

    • Gadget says:

Some banks seem more critical of online apps. Was your application online? Did mine in branch, and had no issue. I have at least 20 Chex inquiries in the last year at the time of application.

  35. Jatan says:

Household member did the offer for $500 DD only

    8/22 Emailed coupon
    8/30 Opened account online
9/7 $501 ACH transfer from Chase posted
    9/8 $200 bonus posted

    • Jatan says:

9/13 Pulled funds from Chase to zero out balance
9/20 Sent secure message to close account (“Opening/Closing Account” option)
      9/22 Account finally closed

  36. Matt W says:

    9/6 – Pushed $1050 from Ally
    9/8 – Transfer posted
    9/12 – Bonus received

  37. John says:

tried to complete online and got a message that my application could not be completed online and that I needed to visit a branch-yuck. Is anyone else getting this message? FYI, I live in Chicago

  38. Phill says:

It looks like the particular promotional code I used states after you qualify you then need to maintain 1k for 60 days for the $200 bonus to trigger, so your YMMV in regards to when you will receive your bonus.

  39. Eric says:

    9/12 – Funded $1500 through USAA push
9/13 – Bonus posted but $56 was withheld because of taxes
Does anyone else know about this amount of money being taken out due to taxes?

  40. Geo says:

Opened account on Aug 4, completed $1500 ACH pushes from Alliant on Aug 9 and Cap 1 360 on Aug 24. Still have not received the bonus. Will update if this changes, but it’s curious considering the other DPs of immediate posting.

    • Andrew says:

I’m in the same boat. Applied early August and pushed money from Schwab and Chase – still no bonus. Will keep you updated if anything posts.

  41. marshbelle says:

Ugh, I’m in GA but all of the branches are 5 hours away in Atlanta and it won’t let me apply online. No $200 for me!

  42. rwalle says:

Tried to open an account today but got rejected because my visa has expired. I am a student, have a current F-1 form and entered US legally (i.e. visa expiration has nothing to do with my allowed stay duration in this case). I have never run into issues like this in any other place. Stupid.

  43. Adam K says:

9/21 funded with 501.xx from chase checking
    9/22 bonus posted

  44. Steve says:

I was able to open my account over the phone by calling 1-800-322-4150 and giving them the 16-digit code from the email I requested. The call took 19min 36sec. My promo is simply $1,000 in deposits and maintain $1,000+. I plan to not hit this step until I return the signed w-9 so as to receive the full $200 and not deal with the 28% withholding.

    • EO says:

I’m in the same boat as you. If you wish to expedite, you can go to any branch and fill out the w-9 there. I was told it should process that same day. Because you need to keep $1500 in account to keep it fee free, I wanted to move quickly so I could make my opening deposit without risking the withholding as you noted.

  45. pr says:

Did people get the bonus with the following account activity?
“Web Initiated Payment At Fifth Third Bank P2p”

  46. Matt says:

I got my bonus within two days of doing a transfer from Ally, but it’s been a week for my wife and she hasn’t gotten anything yet. I opened up my account in branch (got an error online), but the wife was able to open hers online. I’m wondering if the promo code isn’t attached to her account.

  47. BW says:

How do you find routing # and account # online? I don’t see it anywhere.

  48. Brian C says:

    Couple of DP’s…

First off, this has been extended it looks like to December 31st. as of yesterday.

Second, I am in Florida, have banks close by, could not apply online. Emailed the coupon, called the number. From start to finish whole call took 11 minutes and 29 seconds. All set to go.

  49. arch says:

Fifth Third link now shows 31 December expiration and looks like in branch only

  50. Aaron M says:

Got a promo code last Thursday, 9/28. Applied online on Friday (and entered promo code) using this page:

    https://www.53.com/product/apply

Ally push is showing as “Web Initiated Ally” so I’m not counting on that one triggering the bonus. I plan to try with Chase, Discover, and Capital One as well.

  51. Yaobang says:

I’ve just got a new offer using the same link:

$300 bonus for $500 deposit and keep it for 60 days

Haven’t gone to branch. Just wondering anyone got bonus for student checking? Since the offer said it must be an Essential Checking.

  52. Gadget says:

Only showing a $200 bonus… whether I’m incognito or not. I have a to wait a lot of months before trying again. I hope anyone who signed up right away got a screenshot, because you might need it.

  53. Joe says:

In case anyone gets confused, just remember: Fifth Third–that’s the bank. Third Fifth? That’s the liquor store…

  54. Naga says:

    still $200 …

  55. Joe says:

Has anyone tried to get this bonus even if they’ve closed an account within 12 months and been successful?

  56. H XU says:

    $200 here

  57. Gary says:

It showed up as $200 for me too, but I googled “fifth third $300 checking bonus” in incognito and $300 bonus link was the first sponsored result

  58. Ryan says:

Same as Gary–googled “fifth third $300 bonus” in incognito and the top result (which was an ad) was for the offer. For the heck of it (actually, so I could capture the offer webpage in Evernote) I copied & pasted the URL into a non-incognito Chrome window and it still worked fine, so unsure if incognito is necessary or not.

  59. JuicyJosh says:

I was also having no success with $300… until…it could be the multiple attempts but…
Chrome and IE in both regular and incognito only showed $200 for me
Firefox regular $200. Firefox private gave me the $300 with deposit of $500 for 60. Now hopefully they wont decline my SO for inquiries. I closed mine less than 12 months ago.

    • JuicyJosh says:

Of course. In FL. Branch 3 miles away. Entered zip and got this:
“Unfortunately, we are unable to open your account online at this time. However, we’d be happy to help you in a Fifth Third Branch.”

      • H XU says:

        same here

I use my work place zip where we do have a 5/3 bank downstairs

still it says “Unfortunately, we are unable to open your account online at this time. However, we’d be happy to help you in a Fifth Third Branch.”

      • stacker says:

I can tell you from experience that you will not qualify for this bonus if you closed your account less than 12 months ago. If you are opening your account online make sure your previous account has been closed for 365 days to the day and hour because the system will not tell you if the promo code is accepted before opening the account. Fifth Third Bank screwed me out of the bonus because I opened my account 1 hour early from 365 days.

  60. JL says:

Is it possible to open an account at a branch if I don’t live in the states listed but happens to visit one of the states during an upcoming trip? any past DPs on this?

Would love to take advantage of this offer given the easy barrier. Thanks

  61. Dr Zhiv says:

Has anyone had luck getting them to match the $300 offer if the account was recently opened using the $200 offer?

    Does 5/3 usually do that?

  62. John says:

Was denied opening a checking account because I do not live within 50 miles of a branch. CSR said go in branch to open.

  63. VG says:

Any success with Fifth third matching $300 bonus for people who got earlier $200 bonus in last couple of months? I got my $200 bonus 2 weeks back only.

  64. Ozzie says:

I also couldn’t get the link to show the $300 bonus until I searched “fifth third $300” and that link worked in Chrome incognito.

  65. Luke says:

Perfect timing, my one year is up tomorrow

  66. Brian Conley says:

Looks like they do not allow anyone to apply online who lives in the State of Florida. Is anyone else from other states having issues?

  67. JL says:

I first got the $200 offer showing, then just kept refreshing maybe 15-20 times before the $300 offer came up.

    • H XU says:

Unfortunately, we are unable to open your account online at this time. However, we’d be happy to help you in a Fifth Third Branch.

same error for a zip within a 50-mile radius of a branch

    • lp says:

This link brings me directly to the application page which says “Offer code applied: $300 for Essential Checking w/qualifying activity”. Do you know if there’s any way to confirm what the qualifying activity is? It looks like there are reports of multiple different reqs depending on the link used

      • JMD says:

Below is the text from the terms and conditions that appear at the end when you apply from this link. Just remember you have to have to have an average balance of $1500 to waive the $11 fee.

“Get $300 when you open a Fifth Third Essential Checking account and complete qualifying activities.

Qualifying activity: Have deposit(s) totaling $500 or more made to this account within 45 days of account opening AND a $500 minimum balance maintained for 60 days.
Bonus/Account Information: Offer not available to existing checking or Express Banking customers or to those with a Fifth Third Checking® or Express Banking account that has been closed within the last 12 months. Bank reserves the right to limit each customer to one new account-related gift incentive per calendar year. Essential Checking account must be opened between 09/28/17 and 12/31/17. To obtain the $300 bonus, deposit(s) totaling $500 or more must be received within 45 days of account opening AND maintain a $500 minimum balance for 60 days. Bonus will be deposited into your new checking account within 10 business days of completing requirements. Basic Checking, Express Banking and Business Checking accounts are excluded from this offer. No minimum deposit to open a
checking account. Checking accounts may have monthly fees. Bonus may be taxable as interest income and reported on IRS Form 1099-INT. Consult your tax adviser. See your banker for details. Not valid with any other offer”

    • LB says:

Couldn’t get the offer by searching but this link worked! Thanks! Also the terms are the same for me as what JMD replied below. State: TN, $500 DD in 45 days, $500 min balance for 60 days

  68. Typo:
“Just be weary because” should be ” Just be wary because”

  69. Matthew says:

I’ve tried really hard to bring up the $300 offer, including a VPN, incognito, Google ads, etc. I just can’t get it to show up! Recently opened an account with the $200 offer so I sent an SM if they will match.

  70. Vishal says:

    My email offer says:

Get your $200 bonus in 3 steps:
    1. Open a Fifth Third Essential Checking® account.
    2. Within 45 days of account opening have deposits of $500 or more made to this account. And then, maintain a $500 minimum balance for 60 days.
    3. Your $200 bonus will be deposited to this account within 10 business days of completing requirement.

Does this mean I need a direct deposit, or a standard deposit?
    Thanks.

    • Vishal says:

And the Qualifying activity also does NOT mention “direct deposit”. Only deposit.

Qualifying activity: Have deposit(s) totaling $500 or more made to this account within 45 days of account opening AND a $500 minimum balance maintained for 60 days.

  71. Bo says:

Guys – Note that there will be a 12 monthly fee with this checking account . It’ll be waived if:

A combined monthly average balance of $1,500 across your deposit and investment accounts
Spend of at least $500 per month on a Fifth Third credit card
Any existing Fifth Third personal mortgage, auto loan or line of credit with an outstanding balance
Otherwise, service charge is $11 per month (reduced to $8 per month with monthly direct deposits totaling $500 or more).

  72. Jeff says:

Of course. Just signed up for the account in August when the bonus was $200. Bonus posted Aug 31st. Wonder if they’ll match?

  73. heihei says:

You have to wait for 12 months to get the bonus not calendar year.

  74. EO says:

I had just signed up for the $200 bonus a few days ago and have not yet received the bonus. I was able to pull the offer code for the $300 bonus. I just sent a SM with the new offer code to see if they will match the $300 bonus. I will report back when I hear back as it seems a lot of people are interested in this.

  75. BW says:

Had to open an incognito tab to get the $300 bonus to show. Hopefully they’ll match.

    • BW says:

Update: Received $200 bonus today. Pushed $500 from Chase got bonus 2 days later.

No response back to my SM about matching.

  76. henry says:

only saw $200 with incognito and multiple reload….

anyone know how to get $300 page to load?

  77. h xu says:

    just out of branch

they were not aware of this promotion, but surprised to see the 300

but the 300 or 7mxgfj code is not working in their system

    • JuicyJosh says:

When I opted for the email after online directed me to branch, it seems to have a 16 digit alpha numeric code. Personal code I’m assuming. Did bank offer a resolution?

When I opened account in branch last year they bonus never posted with confirmed DD methods. Guessing banker set it up wrong. Fortunately had 90 days so real DD was set up and manual rev requested.

  78. chris a says:

Try a different browser which you haven’t used in a few months to pull up the $300 offer. Opera worked for me. Showed only $200 offer on Chrome and Safari. But when i try to apply online and put my zipcode in, it says to come to branch to open the account even for US citizens. I have multiple brances in 10 mile radius of that zipcode. Not sure if anybody else experiencing this.

  79. CreditSeeker says:

Had to visit branch to open and I made sure I was getting the $300. They told me they don’t allow people in FL to open an account online because it’s the #1 fraud state in the country. I suppose you can try signing up over the phone if you don’t want to deal with the hassle at a branch but I didn’t mind.

  80. George says:

I tried going into the branch in FL and they could not see the code so I was only offered a $200 bonus. Does anyone know the code to give them for $300?

  81. Kaung says:

Would really love a DP on how they handle early termination since there’s no mention of a fee or clawback.

I would try it myself, but I need to get Player 2 to get he bonus first. Gotta take advantage of the no household limit.

  82. Walter says:

Should this promo be a separate thread now? I’m not see a DD requirement to qualify for the bonus. It’s a simple deposit $500 and leave it there for 2 months offer now. Leaving it tacked onto the older promo makes this muddied.

    • AlwaysFlying says:

No DD is needed. I personally am transferring $1500 in order to avoid fees.

To obtain the $300 bonus, deposit(s) totaling $500 or more must be received within 45 days of account opening AND maintain a $500 minimum balance for 60 days

  83. Duke Ingram says:

I’m in Florida and I got the $300 offer with $500 regular deposits within 45 days on 10/8/2017. Initially the system said I cannot open account online and must go to branch. When I answered yes to being an existing customer, I was able to open the Essential Checking without any problems. And the promo code appeared in the application.

Note, I am still able to see my old checking account that I closed on 2/25/2016. That was a big help because I couldn’t remember if it had been 12 months since closing the last checking account. Since I do so many of these deals, I have started keeping a spreadsheet to let me know when I opened and closed an account.

  84. M says:

Am I disqualified if I closed a 5/3 business checking account recently?

    • First time under fine print:

Offer not available to existing checking or Express Banking customers or to those with a Fifth Third Checking or Express Banking account that has been closed within the last 12 months.

      • M says:

Sorry for being thick- I did read through the fine print but am confused on whether “Fifth Third Checking” refers to personal only or both business and personal.

  85. D says:

logged into my account to see that i closed it on 11/2/2016. hopefully it will still be available 11/3!

  86. Leah says:

$300 offer pulled via Internet Explorer in private mode.

I’m in Florida. I input my zip code and got the message that I could not apply online. I did a google map search and it looks like they have no branches in my county.

I picked the email offer option and will try my luck via the phone. I will update!

  87. shak says:

    I live in Illinois.
10/9 Applied for 5/3 Essential Checking online w/ $300 bonus offer.( It took several tries with different browsers to reach the $300 bonus instead of the $200 bonus. My google search text was “Fifth Third 300 bonus”. YMMV!)
Set up Goldman (GS) savings as an external bank on the 5/3 site. It worked instantly with my Goldman credentials…i.e. no requirement for trial deposits.
    10/10 Logged in to 5/3…scheduled a $501 deposit/pull from GS.
Several people have mentioned that, for this particular offer from 5/3, DD is not required. The offer language on the 5/3 $300 bonus page does not include the words “Direct Deposit”.
    We’ll see?

    • henry says:

Just got the $300 page, email doesn’t say direct deposit.

    • shak says:

Here is a copy of the wording from the bonus page I signed up with online:

“Bonus/Account Information: Offer not available to existing checking or Express Banking customers or to those with a Fifth Third Checking® or Express Banking account that has been closed within the last 12 months. Bank reserves the right to limit each customer to one new account-related gift incentive per calendar year. Essential Checking account must be opened between 9/28/2017 and 12/31/2017. To obtain the $300 bonus, deposit(s) totaling $500 or more must be received within 45 days of account opening AND maintain a $500 minimum balance for 60 days (December 13th. No minimum deposit to open a checking account. Bonus will be depositited into your new checking account within 10 business days of completing requirements. (December 27,2017) Basic Checking, Express Banking and Business Checking accounts are excluded from this offer. Checking accounts may have monthly fees. Bonus may be taxable as interest income and reported on IRS Form 1099-INT. Consult your tax adviser. See your banker for details. Not vaild with any other offer.”
No mention of direct deposit. Notice the spelling errors…”depositited” and “vaild”

  88. Robert Fanshaw says:

Got the $300 version to appear by opening the link on phone using mobile data.

  89. Leah says:

Just opened the account in branch yesterday. The offer does not say “direct deposit”, just “deposits” must total $500 within 45 days of opening. As mentioned before, I was able to get the $300 offer using Internet Explorer in private browsing mode.

  90. Aaron M says:

Well, I’ve done four ACH pushes from four different institutions.

Oct 2 – Ally savings: “Web Initiated Payment At Ally Bank P2p”
Oct 10 – Chase checking: “JPMorgan Chase Ext Trnsfr”
Oct 10 – Discover checking: “Web Initiated Payment At Discover Bank”
**pending** – Capital One savings: “Capital One N.a. Capitalone”

I initiated the Chase and Discover transfers last week and tried to space out each transfer by a couple days to see what, if anything, would trigger the bonus. The wording on the transactions suggests this one is a strike out for me.

    • Aaron M says:

And I only did the $200 bonus offer, just days before the $300 one (that apparently doesn’t specify DIRECT deposits) came up. :/

  91. titiex says:

shows $200 (tried incognito, diff browsers and vpn)

  92. Fred says:

Has anyone had trouble verifying trial deposits for initial funding? I did not receive an email asking me to verify, and I can’t find anywhere on the website.

  93. Geo says:

So this is interesting… I signed up for the $200 offer back in August, which supposedly required $500 or $1000 in DD depending on the offer. I didn’t get the bonus using Alliant and Cap 1 after 65 days, so DMd the bank to ask them to reiterate the terms of my promotional offer. Their reply makes no mention of a DD requirement. Four days later (after hitting the 60 day mark), my bonus posted. So for anyone who signed up in this time frame that did not receive their bonus, this may apply to you.

Thank you for contacting Fifth Third Bank. I apologize for any inconvenience this situation may have caused and am glad to assist you.

  94. Karis says:

Couldn’t get the offer on Chrome or incognito, got the offer in Internet Explorer 🙂 Used the following link:
    https://accounts.53.com/banking/offer/checking

  95. Chris says:

Didnt work in Firefox Reg OR InCog…and yet, worked 1st time on iExplore .

  96. trigger08 says:

DP: My wife and I applied with the $300 offer and had $500 ACH push from Ally “Web Initiated Payment At Ally Bank P2p” to each of our accounts on 10/17, as of 10/25 bonus has not posted. Will try with a push from Chase next… For some reason I can’t link Fidelity to these accounts, it comes back with an error about account ownership not matching, so I may have to mail in the Fidelity form since it seems like Fidelity has worked for others.

  97. Jamie says:

The link opens to $200 offer and when I submit the email, the received coupon is also $200. Even though link works for $300 my zip does not allow for online account opening.

Anyone able to open the account at Branch with $300 coupon

  98. Cullen says:

I did an Ally push on 10/17 and as of 10/26 no bonus posted. Should I ping customer service to make sure the bonus code is attached to my account or should I start trying other push methods?

    • Fred says:

If this is the maintain $500 balance for 60 days offer, then there’s no reason to expect the bonus would post until after at least 60 days.

      • Cullen says:

It is, but it looks like a lot of commenters were having bonuses posted only 2-3 days after a deposit – as far as I can tell for the same offer. Also I have to do the qualified deposit within 45 days so I don’t want to necessarily wait 60 days if there is reason to think I need to try another method. So just trying to get a consensus. Thanks for replying.

        • Fred says:

I think (not positive) that those commenters signed up under an offer before October 4th (note that the comments on this post start in August), that I believe required direct deposit (and lacked the 60 day requirement).

I usually don’t save the account agreements and such, but during the account opening process I noted that one of the PDFs (“Q4-Digital-$300_Essential_Checking_Offer.pdf”) had the terms of the bonus, which I take as evidence that my account was opened under the terms of that promo.

  99. Chandra says:

Has anyone who set-up and funded the account this month had their bonus post yet?

  100. Erik Maxwell says:

i got my 200$ just a few days after depositing my 1500$ for the fifth third bonus (which i realize is 300$ now my luck). i hadnt deposited for almost the full 45 days waiting for my w9 form to process. it says i need to keep the 500 in there (1500 to avoid fees) for 60 days but i already got the bonus. theres no early account termination fee. can i take all the money out and close the account or should i keep it in there?

  101. Dani says:

    https://www.53.com/product/apply/now?tag=essentialchecking&offercode=7MXGFJ

This link in normal Chrome worked for 1st time. Agreement at end shows the $300 literature.

    • Dani says:

The pdf at the end said: Qualifying activity: Have deposit(s) totaling $500 or more made to this account within 45 days of account opening AND a $500 minimum balance maintained for 60 days.

Does this mean no DD? Just a normal $500 deposit ?

  102. Adam D says:

If you havent signed up by now its too late to get this bonus this year and next 🙁 I did not see the “one bonus per calender year” fine print….IE worked for me for $300 offer after chrome did not.

  103. Erik says:

I got the Fifth third 200$ (now 300) bonus without having to wait the 60 days. I didn’t do my initial deposit for almost 45 days because I was waiting for the w-9 form to process. Can I drain the account and ask to close or do I still have to wait 60 days?

  104. gabe says:

They may have relaxed the 50mi from branch requirement. I has tried to apply online for this one about a month ago, but was turned down for not living close enough to a branch. Just tried again today and got an account (pending funding).

  105. The Doctor says:

If you signed up for the $200 offer earlier this year, if you go in Branch with the $300 offer code you can ask the banker to match the offer even if you have completed the requirements. They have to call their back office to confirm that they will do this, but will get back to you in 24 hours. For me there was no issue and they approved the additional $100 noting it will be credited within 24 hours.

Worth trying rather than closing out the account.

  106. John says:

Opened with the $300 offer. Made a $1500 deposit from Capitol One 360 account. No bonus after 10 days. So I made a $500 deposit from Chase checking. No bonus after 10 more days. Anybody know what else to try? Thanks

  107. zkay says:

So to confirm (per an earlier comment), the new $300 offer does not require direct deposit? Just any deposit of $500, and maintain $500 balance for 2 months?

If so, could we update the post to reflect that? It’s still listing a $500 direct deposit requirement.

Just opened two accounts, one for wife and I. We’ll see!

  108. trigger08 says:

Well, here’s a sad DP, not only have we not received the bonus yet but we were charged a monthly service fee on the very first statement!

I made an opening deposit of $500 per the promo, and then increased the balance to $1501 about 10 days later. My first statement just arrived and they charged a monthly service fee ($8). Did anyone else get a service charge? Seems hard to keep an average balance of $1500+ unless you make an initial deposit of that amount. I have never seen a bank apply those terms in the very first month statement… I will message them to see if they will waive it…

  109. Charlie says:

Like others, I got a the “not available in your area” message when starting the online app. I email myself an offer code and called in to try to open, but the CSR informed me that they no longer allow new accounts to be opened in my state (Missouri).

  110. Joe says:

Anyone that’s opened a 5/3 account in brach with an out of state ID… I saw Gadget’s succesful DP… I’m flying into Atlanta, should have a 3.5 hour layover in Mid Dec. Was able to get the $300 coupon via safari. I am planning on taking the 10mile, $20 uber each way to open but I will be BEYOND pissed if I can’t open it lol. Question: anyone else have experience?

    • Mrs. Gee says:

I am a PA resident with PA id and was able to open an account in branch while visiting in Florida at the end of September.

    • Peddi says:

I am from Alabama and when visiting Atlanta opened the account. The banker had to talk to the back end department to confirm an out of state person can open the account and they confirmed, it can be done. This is the location I went to. Lindbergh Plaza Financial Center, 2555 Piedmont Rd. NE, Suite 110, Atlanta, GA 30324.

  111. Henry says:

Was charged $8 for below $1500 the first month…

    • Charlie says:

Ridiculous to get charged fees in the first month of account opening, but now you have a great reason to give them for closing the day after you get the bonus and transfer your money out.

  112. Jack says:

Any referral bonus options available to open the checking account?
