Our Verdict

Seems like a good deal to me if you need to rent a car, Avis is priced competitively and you value Virgin Atlantic miles. That’s a lot of IF’s, but I still think a lot of readers will find this promotion valuable.

I rented twice thru this offer. First time no issues during the rental process. Points have not posted at all. The second time, the Avis on site manager balked at the rental. Said something about you had to hold a foreign passport to be eligible for the promotion. They honored the rate. Haven’t seen any points post on that one either.

My 3 day SUV rental (Feb 16-19) in the U.S. posted with 500 miles on VS. I guess I need to call and find out why.

I made two 2-day rentals in January. Only 500 Flying Club miles were posted for each rental today. I don’t if anyone has better luck for the additional 5500 bonus miles.

Same for my early February rental. 500 points thus far, no bonus on my two day rental. Luckily, price was actually cheaper using VA link but don’t need 500 VA miles. Hopefully, promo points will apply in near future.

Same here, rented twice in January and my bonus points still haven’t posted. I’ll see what VS has to say…

this offer make no damn sense. where does it clearly lay out PER DAY or PER RENTAL. so its 500 points per day or per rental? and whats up with 1k points for 7 day rental? it even says “bonus 5,500 Flying Club miles”. how do you get that? so you rent one day and you get BOTH 500 + 5500 = 6k?

not clear at all. this offer is too vague. gonna stay away from this crap. i hate shit when its not clear because that means i need to stay on the phone and fight with the Philippines for hours. fuck that. i would have done a rental run to get 6k points multiple times, but the TC is clearly a headache.

Understood, very confusing to me on first reading too — especially William’s elliptical first paragraph. Try reading the promo link again…. Simply bottom line — rent two days, get 6,000 miles. (the normal 500 PLUS the 5,500 bonus) Rent seven+ days (confusing as heck even mentioning that) and you only get 500 points more….. as the base is more.

Do you have to book rental through VA website to get the bonus?

So do you just credit rewards to VA and they should automatically credit the 6000 points? I always worry about them not following through and the headache that ensues.

Those who may not value VA miles highly because of high fuel surcharge fees, might think about converting them to IHG points (I have read there is a way) and they can be transferred to IHG and will count for elite status in IHG.

Just providing an alternative for those thinking of this deal.

thanks for the reminder of the inexcusable “fuel surcharge” crap…., but recent stealth/severe IHG devaluations make those points worth even less — to me anyway. (unless I’m hording in hopes of point breaks)

I am reminded though of recent reports (Greg @ FM, live & lets fly, etc.) suggesting that we now can book Delta (and Hawaiian) flights directly from the VA site. Wildly complicated perhaps — yet yet another potential alternative to consider.

All true, but amass enough in the year and you can get Spire status and the extra 25,000 IHG point bonus.

Delta miles are similar to HH points or IHG points, however, with Kimpton properties, IHG just became at least more interesting.

Sounds like there aren’t any restrictions to doing this multiple times?
