The Fine Print

  • Offer cannot be combined with any other offer
  • Offer is limited to one incentive per household and does not apply to second or multiple personal accounts
  • Any account not in good standing, closed, and/or with a balance less than or equal to zero at the time we review account eligibility (between 75-120 days after account opening) will not receive the $150 incentive
  • All bank account bonuses are treated as income/interest and as such you have to pay taxes on them

Avoiding Fees

The monthly fees will vary slightly based on what state your living in. We suggest checking this before choosing your account. Most people will be best off going for the Bright Banking account and then using one of the fee waivers, unless you’re a student or senior in which case those accounts will be the best option.

BB&T Bright Banking® $10 monthly

You can avoid the monthly fee on this account if you meet any of the following requirements:

  • Receive $500 or more in direct deposits
  • Have an average monthly balance of $1,500 or more
  • Have $6,000 or more in combined deposits in checking, savings, Money Rate Savings, Investor’s Deposit Accounts
  • Have an outstanding personal mortgage with BB&T

BB&T Fundamentals Checking $5 monthly

It’s not possible to get this monthly fee waived.

BB&T Identity Protection® Checking $6 monthly

It’s not possible to get this monthly fee waived. If you want free identity theft insurance we suggest looking at Credit Sesame (also gives you access to a free FAKO credit score).

BB&T Student Banking $0 monthly

This account does not have a monthly charge if you choose to receive paperless statements. If you choose to receive paper statements you’ll need to pay a monthly fee of $3. You must be under 23 and a student to be eligible for this account.

Senior Checking $8 Monthly

You can avoid the monthly fee on this account if you meet any of the following requirements:

  • Receive $500 or more in direct deposits
  • Have an average monthly balance of $1,000 or more
  • Have $6,000 or more in combined deposits in checking, savings, Money Rate Savings, Investor’s Deposit Accounts
  • Have an outstanding personal mortgage with BB&T

Elite Gold $30 Monthly

You can avoid the monthly fee on this account if you meet any of the following requirements:

  • $25,000 combined deposit balance in checking, savings, CDs, IRAs, Money Rate Savings, Investor’s Deposit Account, or investments through BB&T Investment Services, Inc.
  • $25,000 combined outstanding balance in retail loans and lines of credit3
  • $150,000 BB&T personal mortgage loan balance

Early Account Termination Fee $25

All accounts come with a $25 early account closure fee if you close them within 180 days of account opening.

Our Verdict

This is better than the $125 offer they have had in the past (this was also open to a lot more states), that being said it’s still not good enough to make our best bonus list because we don’t know what else will trigger the direct deposit requirement. You can view all of the current bank bonuses by going here.

BB&T also have a credit card that can earn up to 4.05%.

Well, 5 months later and no sign of bonus. Phone call to 1-800 number ended up with them advising me to talk to my local banker as it was a “regional promotion”. Talking to local banker stalled since the banker had to call 1-800 number and they told her that the account was opened with no promo code (back in February I clicked on “Open Account” button. Last time I deal with this bank. They play games.

Update: the blockheads at the bank don’t care what CFPB forwards to them. Too big to give a damn.

Hello! I just clicked on the “direct link to offer” that you provided. It takes me to a BB&T page with a Page Not Found message.

Have they stopped the promotion?

I was looking forward to this bonus because it came with a pretty sizable CC funding, especially nice after the Citi crackdown. I thought I still had two weeks, dammit! 🙂

Have you heard anything? Let me know if you think I should call the bank or if a less direct route is better.

Hey! I just got off the phone with BB&T. A supervisor spent some time talking to the new accounts dept and the unofficial word is that, although the previous promotion was removed, they are preparing a new and possibly better promotion which they think will be released in the next two weeks.

Thanks for the HT.

By the way, the schedule of fees for GA shows the early account closure fee of $25 is assessed for accounts closed within 180 days, not 90 days.
