You Can Now Activate Your 5% Cash Back On The Discover it For Q4 (Amazon.com & Target)

It’s now possible to activate your 5% cash back rotating categories for the Discover it for quarter four. The categories are:

  • Amazon.com
  • Target

Some people will have double cash back as well, depending on when you applied for the card. You’ll earn 5% on purchase within these categories from October 1st until December 31st, 2017 as long as you have activated this quarter. Might as well enroll now so you don’t forget, but we will do a round up post when all the other cards (Chase Freedom, U.S. Bank Cash+ & Citi Dividend) are open for activation as well.

You can also use this category on Amazon Pay and earn 5%.

Target has $200 VGC online for $6, which isn’t the best deal in the world but easy MS if you have a place you can dump it to. It’s essentially the same as Staples selling $300 VGC for $9 (actually worse since UR has a value of more than a penny a point), so it’s not a smashing deal. If one finds a Target with variable load VGC above $200, expect that aisle to be flushed day one of the quarter, but I haven’t yet.

I don’t really see how the Target category is useful at all- You can get unlimited 5% off at Target year round using the Target RedCard debit card. Unless I’m missing something? Are there things that Target sells that don’t get 5% off the RedCard? I’m pretty sure third-party GCs give the discount. VGCs probably wouldn’t, but I’ve only ever seen denominations up to $100 with a $5 fee, which wouldn’t be profitable even on the 5% Discover.

If I’m missing something, I’d love to know what it is 🙂

The 5% earned from Discover can be applied to discounted gift cards.

You can have the same for Amazon with Amazon Store Card also. In my case, I see an advantage on the discounted gift cards from Discover, just use some last quarter. I saw some comment saying they are all physical, but, I remember Applebee’s and Red Robin being virtual cards.

Buy the discounted Target gift cards on around Dec 3rd (date tbd). 10% off Target gift cards + 5% and you’re at 15% off $600 in Target spend

Yeah but can’t I do that using the REDCard also? Same 5% off as Discover provides.

Target will be real useful in Q4. Stack with the 10% off gift cards on the one Sunday around Dec 1st, and can lock in 15% off $600 at Target (2x $300 GC)

Can I use this on Amazon gift cards? I’m not sure I would spend $1500 in 3 months on Amazon, but I would throughout the year, so if I can just max out the rewards in gift cards then it would be worth it for me.

yes. if you have an ink as well it’s the same as going to staples and buying amazon GC, but if not that’s what i would do.

Finally, something useful! (have a Freedom and would be much too fat if I ate out more often)

I feel like Chase and Discover are playing a game where they match categories. Unfortunately for discover, that means I just end up using the Chase card since their rewards are easier to track. Also, their CB might be more valuable depending on how you redeem it.

If you have UR Chase CC, it is the obvious choice. However, you can get quite a few gift cards for 20% off with Discover rewards.

True, but those are physical cards, and I rarely have the patience or the planning necessary to make that worth my while.

Not if you have the double cashback.. Do you value UR at more than 2 cents per point?

I chose Discover over Freedom for the restaurants as Discover pays each month without regard to MinSp to collect the rewards. Freedom is now the sock drawer card of the month for the rest of the year.

I also prefer going to Mom and pops when I eat out tho. It’s surprising how many still don’t accept Amex and Discover.

They don’t care what you buy for the 5% quarter. It’s a $1,500 cap and they want you to spend more than that on non bonus category.

Apple Pay was only an issue for them since they apparently set the cap too high.
