Card Details

  • $95 annual fee; fee is waived the first year
  • Card earns 2x points everywhere (the equivalent of 2% everywhere or 1.5 airline miles per $1 spent ) and 10x on Hotels.com purchases
  • No foreign transaction fees
  • TSA PreCheck/Global Entry credit
  • Visa Signature benefits

Our Verdict

Standard bonus on this card is 50,000 miles, so this is an extra 25,000 miles. We have seen some targeted offers of 100,000 miles but those are rare. Points are worth 1¢ each when redeeming to offset travel costs or in gift card redemption (e.g. Amazon). You can also now transfer to 12 airline programs as well at a 2:1.5 rate, this would mean the bonus is worth 56,250 airline miles. The downside to this bonus is the card is issued by Capital One and they do a hard pull on all three credit bureaus. Keep in mind, you can freeze your Experian or Transunion and limit the pulls to just two (note: some have had problems with this method). Check out these Things to Know about Capital One Credit Cards before applying. People often get denied by Capital One for various reasons.

Looks like Capital One will become a serious player in the rewards credit card market with these changes. I think they’d be wise to remove the three credit pull policy for premium cards like this, but that probably only makes a small difference to communities like ours. We will be adding this bonus to our list of the best credit card bonuses.

No!

You can get the sign up bonus on Capital One cards more than once. As long as you’re approved, you should get the bonus. There doesn’t seem to be any minimum waiting period.

You can only apply for 1 Capital One credit card for every 6 months, including both personal and business credit cards. You will get automatic denial if you violate this rule, but there will be no hard pull.

For the savvy applicants there’s no need to check the “Affinity” cashback website for this offer as that website’s affiliate offer is 50K miles with $3K in 90 day spend.

Added the link, thanks

i think im one of the few guys on this site without TSA precheck/global entry. this seems like a no brainer for me, combined with the waived fee

My wife and I had Capital One card many years ago when they were offering a $1000 bonus. We took advantage of it and then cancelled the cards before the annual fee came due.

Separately, my wife and I applied for new Capital One cards about 3 and 5 years ago and were denied. I figured we were on their “blacklist” and I recall reading about others having problems getting Capital One cards after previously “taking advantage” of them.

So where does the situation stand now? Like most folks here, I regularly get about 4 new credit cards a year. I’m rarely denied a new card (but I pay attention to thinks like Chase 5/24 rule). Given that history, and my prior experience with Capital One, is it worth submitting an application?

How high is your credit score? 750+ and never carry balances and you will most likely get denied.

Emily
Emily

Yup. Just tried again after a long time of having their cards cancelled. Denied. Credit score 790. I even have a banking relationship with them.

Your situation is almost exactly like mine – and we have also been denied the consumer cards since. The lone bright spot is that we have been successful in each getting a business card.

Do you know if they do a hard-pull if you’re blacklisted or do they deny outright?

Why is it wise to remove the three hps policy that only makes a difference to communities like ours? I would not like to invite us if I were the CO manager.

Brian

For every 1 true “churner” there is probably 3 or more people who read about a deal on a CC blog and in the hopes of being credit card savvy apply but then dont follow thru and and up just keeping the card. The 3HP can drive away real profitable customers as well. That’s something the CO has to balance.

Elmer
Elmer

That sounds more like a churner trying to justify other reasons why to end it. They’re target market is saying “three what?”

CM

Folks who do Three-What? are unlikely to be the target market, as they generally have a credit score to show for it.

There are states where all banks pretty much check the same bureau, me included, so I don’t give a hoot about 3 pulls.

Thanks for including what we can freeze to limit the pulls. I haven’t found a definitive source for this information yet.

Instant denial for my wife. 40+/24. All bureaus scorched. I was denied by Cap1 back in July.

Who are you still getting approved from? Amex?

Darv
Darv

My wife and I have same stats. Last six months–US Bank (FP Gold). BMO Harris (Plat&Premium x2). Wells Fargo (Propel World for second time each). Chase (IHG Premier x2). Amex (several cards each). HSBC (Plat rewards). Citi (AA xmany). BofA (Biz cash rewards).

Yeah, maybe time to take a break

Darv

Nope, keep going. Cap1 is tough. So is Barclays now with 6/24. Chase still a few options. BofA is pretty much dead–don’t know how my wife got approved for that card. US Bank will still approve as long as TU inquiries are relatively low and you hit them at the right time. Citi still going strong. We’ll be slowing down a bit but not because of denials. I could see Citi tightening up early-mid next year though.

Just fyi just got my first denial from barclay. Arrival+ was flat out denied with no credit pull because I’ve had the product for the max amount of times.

Trying to meet MSR on a couple other cards this holiday season. How is Capital One’s sensitivity with P2P payments like Venmo?

I don’t think they care personally I bury everything in grocery, cvs or walgreens for vgc

Can’t… get… approved

JT

Why are some people still parroting the idea that you can get approved for C1 w/ Exp frozen? It’s not happening.

el_pistolero

I had this card from Dec 2017 to July 2018.
Then I applied for Savor for which I was denied.

I m gonna skip this since I sure they will reject me again.

Of course… wife just got the Venture 60k offer a couple months ago, and I was just approved for the Savor. Sigh.

Can you use these “miles” for travel redemption on refundable tickets on SW? And most importantly do they reverse the redemption if you travel plans change….

2nd question i dont know

Does this still earn 10x at Hotels.com? So 7.5x air miles on hotels?

Me too. I’m sure they are going to say too many inquiries. Are you going to bother with reconsideration?
