There’s a new gift card reseller on eBay which has come to our attention called Giftcardoutlet. Previously, there were just four resellers: Giftcardmall, Paypal Digital Gifts, SVM Gift Cards, and Cardency. Giftcardoutlet is a fifth player in the game.
We mentioned some gift cards on sale from Giftcardoutlet a few days ago and we hypothesized then that the seller is actually Cardpool as both are located in Emeryville, California. This was confirmed in the comments by a reader that the charge comes up as ‘PayPal*Carpool’.
Brett from Cardpool chimed in over there that the gift cards sold by Cardpool on eBay are not second-hand cards, rather they are over-runs from another program.
This point is important because that means the resale game is on for these cards purchased on eBay. While I wouldn’t recommend reselling second-hand cards, these first-hand cards would seem no different than cards purchased from Giftcardmall or any of the other sellers. However, Brett let us know that you can not sell these back to Cardpool; apparently their system is coded to reject cards that had been previously run through it. We still may be able to sell it to other exchanges.
More importantly, of course, is that we now have another gift card reseller on eBay to buy gift cards from. Even better, they are selling discounted gift cards on a steady basis. Most of the gift card sellers on eBay have sporadic sales while Giftcardoutlet has all of their cards discounted. They had the popular Home Depot gift cards at a 5% discount, although those are all sold out now, and they’ve been selling Sports Authority, AMC, Bass Pro Shops, and Aeropostale.
As we noted in the previous post, the advantage of purchasing from Cardpool on eBay is that we can get an extra few percent back from the portal and the eBay Bucks. Also, we can pay with eBay gift cards purchased at a discount or with a Visa or Amex gift card via the Paypal checkout system.
More Details from Cardpool
We reached out to Brett from Cardpool to see if we can clarify a few more details about Giftcardoutlet. He wasn’t able to say a lot due to the fact that the corporate parent of Cardpool is Blackhawk and they control which details are to be released, but we did find out a few more things.
- Giftcardoutlet began selling in Q1 2015 (wow, we missed this one for a good few months!) and thus far they’ve been selling the cards mentioned above.
- The cards being offered will change, but no information can be released now as to which cards will be sold in the future.
- In 2015, all cards sold on eBay will be new cards, not second-hand cards. Again, no information can be released as to what will be in the future.
Let’s hope that they’ll add many more valuable brands to their lineup sold on eBay!
