Avoiding Fees

Savings Account

The Chase Savings Account comes with a monthly service fee of $4 in most states and $5 in CA, FL, GA, ID, NV, OR and WA. Monthly fee is waived with any of the following:

  • Keep a minimum daily balance of $300 or more.
  • Have at least one repeating automatic transfer from your Chase checking account of $25 or more. One time transfers do not qualify.
  • Have a linked Chase Premier Plus Checking, Chase Premier Platinum Checking, or Chase Private Client Checking account.

Checking Account

The Chase Total Checking account comes with a monthly service fee of $10-$12 which is waived if complete any of the following:

  • Have monthly direct deposits totaling $500 or more
  • Keep a minimum daily balance of $1,500 or more
  • Keep an average daily balance of $5,000 or more in any combination of qualifying Chase checking, savings and other balances

Early Account Termination Fee

If you close either account within 6 months of account opening, you will forfeit the bonus.

Our Verdict

With these e-mail coupon bonuses, there is only a certain amount of them before they run out – if you’re thinking of doing this deal I’d recommend acting quickly to get the coupon.

Here’s how to go about getting this $500 offer:

  • Go to a local Chase branch and open a Savings and Checking account.
  • Deposit $1500 (or a little less to account for the future direct deposit) into the checking and $15,000 into the Savings.
  • Get a direct deposit to the Chase checking account. See what has counted for direct deposit in the past here.  (Personally, I did a $100 ACH push from Serve a couple of months ago and it worked.) This will trigger the bonus requirement.
  • Be sure that you always have $1500 in the Checking account and $300 in the Savings account to keep it fee-free.
  • Wait until the Tuesday after completing the requirements for the bonus to post. (Chase is weird and always posts the bonuses on a Tuesday). If you don’t receive the bonus, use another direct deposit to try and trigger it.
  • Wait 90 days before pulling $14,700 out of the Savings account and into your regular high-interest checking account.
  • Wait until 6 months after the opening date.
  • Withdraw all funds & close the accounts, getting ready to do it all again in 2016.

Chase bank bonuses are one of the best bank bonus there is. There is no minimum on the direct deposit requirement, it’s easy to keep the account fee free and the bonuses are massive as well. If you’ve never completed a bank bonus before, this is the one to get your feet wet with. We’ll be adding this bonus into our list of Best Bank Bonuses while it’s available.

In the past, we saw a $175 Savings deal (expired) which didn’t require tying up the money for 90 days, but that was the anomaly; typically you need to tie up the funds.

Another interesting thing to note is that this link (above) is capable of generating multiple unique coupon codes to the same Chase account. So if you want to save a second code for a friend, just log out and click the link again to get a second unique code. (You may not even have to log out.)

You only have to deposit like $50 into the checking account if you do both. The 15k in savings counts for the fee waiver. You only need to get it up to $1500 when you withdrawal from the savings account – before that you are fee free under “Keep an average daily balance of $5,000 or more in any combination of qualifying Chase checking, savings and other balances”

I don’t have any Chase branches in my state.

Can I open one in a different state from where I live and still take advantage of this offer?

Is there any way to get this bonus while opening up an account online instead of in-branch? Chase doesn’t have any locations in my state.

William Charles

Don’t think so.

$15,000 trapped in the account for 90 days a big issue. You can use those 15k to manufacture spend or buy/sell stuff multiple times in the 90 days to make much more than $200. Isn’t the opportunity cost for the savings account too high?

That is true, but if you want a fair comparison, you should probably take into consideration the time you’ll be spending MSing or reselling stuff.
For this Savings account offer, you don’t need to do anything besides parking the money in there, so I think it makes most sense to compare it with a high yield savings like Chuck said.

In my opinion and experience, the key to profiting in reselling was not the capital, but usually what/where to buy and who/where to sell. If you have the right product and right channel, using credit card for reselling pretty much requires $0 to operate.
For example, people reselling Apple product to China usually gets the money back before statement closes.

Anyway… what I’m trying to say here is that comparison Savings account offer with activity that requires more than just parking fund is not very fair.

How can I get the coupon if I don’t have any accounts with chase yet? The registration process requests a pre-existing account #. Can anyone share with me a coupon code?

Vic

Hey Andrew,

Send me an email and I’ll give you my code.
(email’s in here http://pastebin.com/bAa1Upjz )
I have both accounts so I won’t be able to use any of these offer until 2016.

Hi I am curious if the $500 bonus can be paid in the form of Ultimate Rewards points. It would be great to receive them in points instead of cash. Thanks for any tips and help.

William Charles

No.

@Chuck, Is it not little weird, it asks you to login your account to generate the code, but if you have an account, you are ineligible to get the bonus?

Vic
Vic

it could be in a sense targeted to existing chase credit card holder without bank account.

My wife is a joint on my account will she be eligible for this offer?

I had hoped to find the one again that only tied up $5K for 90 days. That one expired before I could make it work. I won’t tie up $15K. That’s too long to tie up an emergency fund.

But, I do have a printout for the $10K deposit for the $200 bonus. Current customer so no checking bonus for me.

Very important to point out the differences in how long to keep the big money in (90days) and the 6-month leave it alone management requirement. Thanks for those bullet points.

There was a public offer of $175 bonus last month that required only $15K of initial deposit and no time requirement, which means it can be withdrawn immediately technically.
My wife and I both signed up and received the bonus a week later.
It was one of the best Chase offers in my opinion.

This is not one per household, correct?

For some reason I can’t get my printer (or PDF printer) to print the pictures at all, will that be a problem in branch?

Vic
Vic

ShouldN’t be a problem as they normally just need the code.
Take a picture on your phone and bring it if you can, just to be safe.

Thanks so much for posting this!
The banker said it was one of the highest bonuses she’s seen.
Totally beats buying on eBay.

FYI, I just opened both types of accounts, using the last promotion they offered, and Chase is telling me that the savings promotion will not be deposited until after the 90 day period. I felt the wording above was a little misleading, but maybe they are doing things differently from branch to branch (not likely). Anyways, I contacted them about it and they said I will receive it after the 90 days. I was worried that they were not going to give it to me, but they explained that the 90 day trigger had not occurred.

Is there anyway to get a code without being a Chase customer?

Mei

It said “system error, we can not retrieve your coupon code” in the print page where the coupon code should display. Does anyone meet this problem?
