Readers had numerous questions about the new Chase Freedom Flex card, and we reached out to the Chase media team for some clarifications. So here goes (I paraphrased the conversation below; these are not exact quotes from Chase):
- Q: Existing Freedom cardholders can product change their old Freedom Visa to the new Freedom Flex Mastercard. We’ve heard conflicting information about whether existing Freedom cardholders are able to keep their old Freedom card and apply anew for the Freedom Flex. Please clarify.
- A: Yes, Freedom cardholders can either product change to the Freedom Flex card or sign up for the Freedom Flex as a new card while holding their old Freedom card. (If a customer product changes, their old card will be deactivated when their new one is activated. However, existing customers can directly apply for the Flex card and still keep their current Freedom 5% card.)
- Q: Okay, but is the Freedom Flex card considered a new product for signup bonus purposes? If someone received a bonus on the old Freedom card within the past 24 months, and they get approved for the Freedom Flex card, will they receive the bonus?
- A: Yes, if they get approved they will receive the bonus, even if it’s within 24 months of the receiving a bonus on the old Freedom card since the Flex card is a new product.
- Q:Â Many cardholders who recently signed up for the Freedom card with the 5% grocery bonus for the first year are wondering: if they change their old Freedom card to become a Freedom Flex card will they lose the 5% grocery bonus given that the Flex is a new card?
- A: No, they’ll keep the the 5% grocery bonus if they product change. (Editors note: Wow, nice! I assume if you do any other product change – e.g. to Freedom Unlimited – you’ll lose the bonus; this is likely a special exception for changing from the Freedom to the Freedom Flex.)
- Q: The FAQ states “You cannot have two or more Chase Freedom Flex credit cards.” The way it works currently with the old Freedom is that a customer can not apply for a Freedom card if they are a Freedom cardholder, but they can product change to the Freedom even if they already have one. Thus, many people have more than one Freedom card. Will it work the same way with the Flex card or is the Flex card more limited with just one available per person?
- A: As the FAQ states, customers cannot have two or more Flex cards.
- Q: Will the 5% rotating categories be the same on the old Freedom and the Freedom Flex cards?
- A: Yes
- Q: Can you confirm that points from the Freedom Flex card will transfer to premium cards like the Sapphire Preferred to allow the increased redemption options available on those cards?
- A: Yes, points can transfer to Sapphire; it will work the same as it currently does with Freedom card.
We are grateful for Chase clarifying these points.
