Chase IHG Pre-Approved Offer (Fixed APR, Bypass 5/24?)

Update 7/14/21: Looks like it doesn’t bypass 5/24.

Reader Mark D informed us that they were pre-approved for a Chase IHG card when logged into the IHG website. Interestingly the APR on this card is fixed and in the past this has bypassed the 5/24 rule with other offers. Unfortunately when reader Mark D tries to apply the application fails.

Worked for me and I’m definitely over 5/24 just checked the card shows up in my chase online banking so I know I’m approved

How were you able to apply? Did your link from the account page or a dummy booking work without you having to mess with it?

it doesn’t work. P2 applied while way above 5/24 and had fixed APR and pre approved notice on the IHG website via dummy booking. Went to pending and called recon and rep said it was declined due to too many cards opened in last 24 months.

Maybe I’m missing something. The commentary says that fixed APR offers tend to bypass 5/24, but the terms in the screenshot (which are the same I see on my offer) describe a variable rate.

Most travel cards (and many cards in general) define APR relative to the prime rate (e.g. prime + 8%, reported in the box as the final sum). As the prime rate changes, the APR on your card changes.

Chase preapprovals have a “fixed” APR in that the reported prime+X is a single number. For non-preapproved offers, a range (e.g. prime+8% to prime+14%) is presented in the box with the adder you get for your specific account selected based on your creditworthiness.

I’m 7/24 and saw the fixed APR of 15.99% and was told I was “Pre-Approved” when doing a dummy booking and logged into my IHG account. I applied and got the “we will get back to you” message. I assume the fixed APR isn’t bypassing 5/24 but I’ll update everyone if that changes and I’m somehow approved. I’m not planning on calling reconsideration.

I did the same and got the same message. Not holding my breath.

Just an update. I got a “letter” today in my online Chase account. My application was denied due to “too many credit cards opened in the last two years associated with you.” So the fixed APR/preapproval does not work to get around 5/24 in the IHG case like it did with United in Dec 2019. I was able to get approved in a similar scenario in that case when pre-approved with fixed APR in the United app.

OK…the link in your IHG account homepage will not work…but if you make a dummy booking, you’ll see the pre-approved offer on the final confirmation page, and that link does work (with a fixed APR). I applied and got a “we will get back to you” message (I’m way over 5/24), so I’m guessing this does not bypass. On hold with reconsideration now…will update based on what they say.

That link didn’t work for me either… any other ideas to get it to work?! Were you approved?

Copy the pre-approved link on IHG website, you’ll find the “&ihgid=xxx” at the end of the link.
Continue into the page and copy the link of “Respond Now”, append the “&ihgid=xxx” to it and you should be able to get to the Chase application page with fixed APR.

If you do all that, you’ll probably still be subject to 5/24. To bypass it, you likely have to actually be targeted to bypass it, not merely append your IHG account number to a link. So far for me, the link on the home page doesn’t work, and the link on the dummy booking doesn’t work. I think it’s likely no one has yet been able to apply the way Chase wants us to apply, so it’s not too surprising about the denials.

Per reconsideration, the application had already been approved, with a credit line, so presumably that’s official.

BUT…I just double checked my credit report, and it turns out I was at 4/24 (5 other business cards during that time period that didn’t report to personal), so my mistake, apologies to all…not a useful data point.

So far, it seems no one has been approved from this offer?

7/24. Got to the application page with fixed APR by some tricks and applied. Was not instantly approved and when I called the status check line it said 7-10 days, so most likely being denied. Still not sure if it can bypass 5/24 with instant approval, and I’m not going to call the reconsideration line.

7-10 days is the bad answer according to the Chase flow chart: https://imgur.com/a/oXlPW

I hope people read the comments and realize that no one has actually been able to pull up the link and bypass 5/24.
