[Expired] Citi Cards: Use Paypal and get $20 Back or 15% Back [Various Targeted Offers]

Deal has expired, view more Citi deals by clicking here.

The Offer

No direct link, targeted offer via email

Citi is sending out targeted cashback bonus offers for those who use Paypal with their linked Citi card. The offer is found on various cards such as American Airlines, Dividend, Rewards+, etc. There are at least two different iterations of the offer:

  • Get $20 back when you spend $120 on Paypal with your Citi card.
  • Get 15% back when you spend on Paypal with your Citi card, up to $20 cashback.

The Fine Print

  • Valid 8/26/19 – 10/25/19
  • An eligible purchase is a purchase made when PayPal is the payment method, except for peer‐to‐peer transactions (such as PayPal Send Money transactions), Citi credit card purchases made with convenience checks, cash advances, and items returned for credit.
  • Your purchases must post to your account between 08/26/2019 and 10/25/2019. Delays by the merchant, such as shipping, could extend the date that your purchases post beyond the promotional period.
  • The statement credit will be applied to your account within 2 billing cycles after the eligible purchases are posted.
  • To qualify for this offer, your account must be open and current when the statement credit is applied. If you convert to another Citi product, you may no longer be eligible for this offer.
  • Offer is non‐transferable and only available for the account noted in this email.

Our Verdict

We’ve seen this in the past, I recently got a cool $40 from the prior Citi offer. This one is maxed out at $20, but still nice.

Do I need to make a single purchase of 120 or more, or I can split the amount in several orders? Thanks.

I split my purchases into 2 separate orders.

I made the purchase in early September.
statement close #1 9/16 — no credit
statement close #2 10/16 — no credit
statement close #3 11/16 — TBD

nothing in my account that said that the requirements were satisfied

very bad

The terms is 90 days, so we shall see.

Anyone targeted last time and made the spending, did you receive the bonus yet? I am still waiting for the bonus for my July purchase.

Bought a $120 Walmart e-gift card from Walmart.com. They allow payment using paypal. I shop there all the time anyway and it’s hard to find deeply discounted Walmart gift cards so it should be an easy $20 back and I’ll spend the WM gift cards within a month.

Are we able to link card to PayPal, then link PayPal to Samsung Pay, then pay in store with PayPal via Samsung Pay to take advantage of this offer? Or does Samsung Pay only use PayPal balance?

Do Citi Costco cards qualify? Haven’t got any emails about promotions like these.

Any simple way to use this without actually buying something?

I was wondering if a peer-to-peer with the fee (as if you’re purchasing merchandise) would work. If the PayPal fee is 3%, perhaps make peer-to-peer “purchase” of $116.55 to a friend who will return the money via no-fee peer-to-peer to net the $20 credit. Might work, not too sure…

Yeah, I suppose I could send money to my wife’s PP account as a payment for goods, assuming that would work.

Got the 15% up to $20 deal on my Citi Premier. A couple months ago I got a $25 off of $75 offer on my AT&T Access card (which I used). Glad to get the promo again.

Same exact situation as NK3. I would note that PayPal may end up overriding your category bonus from what you might expect, so do it for the promo, not for the long term. e.g. Citi support said that they would NOT give me a courtesy credit, even though all of my ebay/paypal online purchases only coded up as 1x in the last cycle

ok, no problem. i just unlinked the card, and switched in something else that might get the promo. if citi wants to be shitty, two can play at that game!
