Experian (formerly CCN systems) was started in Nottingham, England in 1996. It now operates in over 40 different countries, with their largest operations being in the United States of America & the United Kingdom. It’s listed in the London stock exchange (LSE:EXPN) and is part of the FTSE 100.
Experian is best know for being one of the three big consumer reporting agencies (TransUnion & Equifax being the others) in the United States. They have a number of products aimed at consumers, selling access to their credit scores & credit reports. In 2003, this arm of their consumer business took a hit with the FTC announcing that the three credit bureaus would now need to make credit reports freely available to consumers once annually. Since then Experian has refocused their consumer business to focus on the selling of credit scores.
They own or have partnerships with some of the biggest credit score selling websites, such as freecreditscore.com and myFICO, they also sell these scores directly on their websites. At the time of publishing, Experian were selling the following scores: VantageScore, PLUS score & FICO score. Although other companies were also selling creditXpert and a number of other FAKO scores based on data found in Experian credit reports.
They also have a creditor arm, which is responsible for selling credit data directly to creditors who use this in their lending decision. This is the largest portion of Experian’s business, dwarfing their consumer division. In total they employ 14,000 employees and generated revenue of $4.6 billion in 2013.
Experian is the largest of the three bureaus in the United States.
