Data Breach: Chili’s – Payment Information Taken

Chili’s is the latest business to be the subject of a data breach. According to the announcement malware was used to gather payment information (credit/debit card numbers, cardholder names). They believe data was stolen between March & April 2018 but they are still investigating the scope of the attack. It looks like it only affected certain Chili’s restaurants and not all customers are affected even if you did visit during the breached period. They haven’t provided any estimates on how many customers are affected, or a list of stores.

It has been my long term position that these data breaches will continue to occur in increasing numbers until the penalties involved for having data breaches are suitably increased. If you think you’ve become the victim of a data breach, I’d recommend reading this post and following the steps.

Yawn. This is just another reminder to never use debit cards for POS purchases.

This is not going to slow down until banks go to a more secure method than mag stripe technology. Restaurants lag sorely behind retail store POS equipment, the vast majority have the server swipe the card at a staff POS terminal/kiosk not accessible to the customer. Chili’s has the portable units at the table that let you play games, order more drinks, and pay for your bill, those things are probably much more susceptible to being skimmed.

Truth is most banks accept that fraud is the cost of doing business and they feel it’s cheaper to just write off those loses rather than force an upgrade to two-factor authentication such as chip and pin. Until they upgrade to something two-factor, this will continue to happen.

Big deal if someone gets your CC number, I am not liable for purchases and since I keep a close watch on my accounts, I’ll see anything right away and can get it shut down. Debit card is a different story which is why I never use it anywhere besides the ATM(and CCs give you much better rewards!)

Ill sign my rights to sue away for a free queso and chips/salsa. How do offer this settlement. I think the local store manager will laugh at me.

Agreed 100%, but how do we do this?

With so many retailers being compromised lately that i have gotten used to taking news like this for granted now. Not sure what other readers feel about this.

I never understood why its so hard for retailers to secure this information in first place. They just need to build good software and secure the information they collect. Its basic software engineering.
