Dollar General: Buy $50 In Select Giftcards, Save $10 (Uber, Darden, Applebee, GameStop, iHop & Hulu) $5 Off $30 In Some Locations

Update: Seems like a lot of locations are $5 off $30+ instead of this $10 off $50+ deal.

The Offer

Couldn’t find in weekly circular, but shows up in store

  • Dollar general is offering a $10 instant discount if you buy $50 in select gift cards. Eligible gift cards are: Darden, Applebee, GameStop, iHop, Uber, VGC, Hulu

The Fine Print

  • Valid from November 4th until november 10th

Our Verdict

I can’t really tell if that VGC really means Visa gift card or it’s some weird part of the Uber deal and it means virtual gift card (update: according to this comment it means variable uber). I hope it’s the former. Not all Dollar General stores will allow credit cards on gift card purchases so keep that in mind. If anybody gives it a go, share your experiences in the comments below.

Had a weird incident yesterday. Bought 9 Gamestop $30 GCs. 8 rang up with $10 discount and one was $5 off. Location 2 was $5 off for everything. Strange, but thought I’d share.

No discount at all was ringing up at the register. So they’ve posted that they simply won’t honor the ad.

You’re thinking of the wrong promo. This one ended November 10th and I saw no reports of the 5/30 not working correctly. There was just a glitch in the system that started at some point in the week giving off $10 for amounts that werent 50. The current one for this week wasn’t ringing up and so DG nixed it.

Forgot to mention. I did this on GS cards, but I assume it is the same for other 3rd party GCs

So here is the deal. Registers are hard-coded in a weird way. For all of you only seeing $5 discount. The discount actually kicks in once you hit $30. So, you can ring your first card at $30 with a $5 discount, and the rest of your cards you can get them for $25 with a $5 discount on each (your 20%). I have done it twice in two separate stores and worked like a charm.

I got $5 off loading $50 to a variable load Uber. No signage in store.

Fwiw my local dollar general has the same mcc as a warehouse store, so use Discover.

My store is signed as $5 off $30. Also, they do accept credit cards for third party gift cards, just not on prepaid MC/Visa cards (per corporate), so if they try to tell you otherwise, don’t buy it 😉 I have purchased multiple cards in one transaction and the discount applied to each one, so you shouldn’t have to split them up.
