eBay Gift Cards No Longer Tied to Paypal, Now Tied to eBay

Partially-used eBay gift cards are no longer tied to the Paypal account utilized at checkout, rather to your eBay account.

Ebay made numerous changes in the terms of their gift cards, most importantly removing the annual usage limits that gift cards previously had. Other changes include a $1,000 limit per transaction and no more 4-hour wait until the gift card is ready-for-use.

The terms now indicate that a partially-used eBay gift card is tied to the eBay account with which it was first used, a change from the old terms which spoke of the card being tied to the Paypal account. I just discovered this change – not sure if it’s been there the whole time along with the other changes or not.

Yesterday, I tested this out a couple times and was successfully able to use an eBay gift card partially with one Paypal account and partially with another. I haven’t tested out switching from one eBay account to another, but I assume that it won’t work, as indicated in the terms.

Recap of changes:

  • No annual limit on gift card usage
  • Limit of $1k in gift cards per transaction
  • Limit of 8 gift cards per transaction
  • No more waiting until gift card is ready-to-use
  • Partially-used gift cards are tied to the eBay account, not the Paypal account

Does Ebay have the capability to show the transaction history of the gift card now?

Fiby

I will say that during this “transition phase” it’s good to keep in mind any gift cards previously tied to paypal accounts are still tied to them.

I have had a much smoother time of using eBay gift cards in this new system. No more weird timing out after trying to use a 4th or 5th gift card.

Is there any way to unlink an ebay gc tied to a paypal account? I had an account closed and they are unusable.

Paypal closed my account so I am hoping I can use my gift cards straight at eBay without Paypal. Hope this will be the first step to that feature —

Wait a couple months and then sign up for another account. Never call them about anything which would cause a human to look at your account and always follow the rules, and ramp your spending up slowly and you’ll be fine. I’ve been going for over a year with an account I created after I was shut down.

so my ebay account which was banned still had $150 left on a partially used ebay giftcard… does that mean I’m screwed out of the $150 now

It will probably depend on when exactly did you use it for the first time. Check in Paypal if you have it listed there, if so then it’s linked to your Paypal, otherwise it’s linked to Ebay.

If you used it for the first time before March 2016 it’s likely tied to your Paypal.

Curious, how did you get banned?

this happened a few weeks ago when you could no longer see transaction records of NEW gift card usage on your paypal. In point of fact, new eBay gift cards stopped showing/registering under the money settings of payapl. if anyone knows how to access each eBay gift card’s usage or transaction record, let us know.

So does this change any of the limitations or mechanics with GC reselling? eBay GCs will still be sold by PPDG right, so still 5x back with Ink?

I’m still dealing with over $100 in ebay gift cards that were linked to PayPal under the old rules and are spread across 3 paypal accounts. The system won’t allow me to use the gift card which is bs. Really not looking forward to calling Paypal to deal with this…. I have no doubt it’s collateral damage with this recent change.

I wish they would use the Amazon system of just adding codes coupons and cards to one balance.

Very infuriating not being able to use a small balance code1st when using a larger code, it always takes the larger code, and that more often than not leaves you with 2 small balance codes.

Agreed. On the other hand, Amazon should allow amazon gift cards to use for payment for other gift cards.

If you use eBay GCs extensively you probably already have a good record keeping system. If you don’t you should. I looks like there will be no tracking provided by eBay.
I would suggest trying very hard to use up the complete value of the card in a purchase… leaving no partial amount on the card. Based on the problems people have had recently using GCs on eBay I certainly don’t want them to be the custodian of my money.

This is prudent advice. If the total is close I’ll just use a credit card to finish it off. One of those things where trying to use 100% gift cards can sometimes be a point of diminishing returns. Have to pick your battles with eBay and ask yourself sometimes if it’s worth the incremental gain.

I also only use entire eBay cards now, if possible. I always pay with a credit card for small amounts left over after the gift card has been used. I’m getting close to finishing up with my eBay GC collection. Too confusing. Especially when you get a refund…

Any recent data points about using eBay GC to buy eBay GC?

If I buy an eBay GC with Ink Cash for the 5% back, should I check out using Paypal or directly via eBay? Does it matter?

I tried to use Ebay GC to buy Ebay GC( both egift and physical) from yesterday. It keep showing “can’t apply the code to this order”. Tried to buy other gift card and it works. Does ebay no longer allow Ebay GC to buy Ebay GC?

Fiby

Try just the physical. You may just be running into issues with PPDG.

On that note, eBay’s t&c always forbid the use of eBay gc to buy eBay gc. They never enforced it as far as I could tell.

I tried physical also (not PPDG) today and yesterday, didn’t work.

Fiby

Looks like they started enforcing that rule then.

Any idea if we can see history of a gift card anywhere? I bought ebay gift cards from Target on 5/6/16. Just tried to use them today and most are drained, the others partially. I did use ebay gift cards once since then (not those amounts) but on paypal it shows the gift card numbers as letters, which we know not to be the case. Shame on me for not recording which gift cards I used that day, I know.

I’ve tweeted both ebay and target. I’ve not shared these numbers, so I can’t figure out how they’d be drained. Oddly enough, Target no longer sells ebay gift cards…

i wanted to add, i just had my account permenatly limited after 13 years. i was using a lot of ebay gift cards they said. i had 2 cards partially used and was able to drain them with another paypal account thankfully. I think most of it revolves around too much purchasing with paypal digital gifts, i can buy gift cards from anyone else without issue but PPDG always locks my account and i had to speak to a specialist who told me “using lots of ebay gift cards was frowned upon and was high risk”.
