[Expired] Facebook Waiving Donation Fees & Matching Up To $7,000,000 For GivingTuesday (Starts 8AM EST)

The Offer

Direct link to offer

  • Starting at 8:00 AM Eastern Time (5:00 AM Pacific Time) Facebook will be waiving all fees for donations made to any US-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit. In addition they will match the first $7,000,000 donated.
    • Donations are matched dollar for dollar on a first-come, first-served basis until $7,000,000 USD in eligible donations are made on Facebook.
    • Any US-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit eligible to receive donations on Facebook can be matched.
    • Facebook will match up to a total of $100,000 per nonprofit organization.
    • Each donor can have up to $20,000 in eligible donations matched on GivingTuesday.
    • We cover processing fees so that when you donate using Facebook’s payments platform to a nonprofit organization, 100% of your donation goes to support the cause you care about.

Our Verdict

You won’t know if your donation is matched until mid-January, so that is frustrating. Given the size of Facebook $7,000,000 seems like a low dollar amount, but it’s better than nothing. If anybody knows of any other initiatives like this for GivingTuesday, please let us know in the comments below.

I am the development director of a non profit. Last year we had about 10 people make donations at 8:00 ready fro the match and only one at $500 made it as a match. I have the report with timestamps of donations made by the second. I can not image that $7million was matched by 8:00.36 seconds am. Is that even possible. Secondly the $500 that was supposedly matched to this day we have not received the $500 from FB. I think its all a scam and sad. I would love FB to release a list of how much they supposedly gave to each non profit by name and amount. And they have no people you can talk to. All automated messages. I would bet that there are many non profits in same spot we are. I wish we could get people talking about this!

Full disclosure, I don’t like FB, but I have seen multiple places that the $7mm was gone almost immediately – did you participate in the US Mint deal a couple weeks ago? It was that same craziness with FB matching. $7mm is a rounding error for them, I don’t believe they would try to scam something so small, yet so public, but Incompetence? That is likely

Wow that’s crazy that you guys didn’t receive it. It comes in the spring through Network for Good. I also work at a non-profit and we have had a few fundraisers receive matching donations from fb and/or the bill Gates foundation through fb each year. Yes – usually gone in seconds. We’ll see how we did this year. Last year we received about $3,000 which for a smaller non-profit is a pretty great match!

According to Forbes, the FB 7M was used up in minutes last year. forbes.com/sites/chrisstrub/2019/11/25/7m/#dc2a2aa5b03d

I’ll all for giving and 7M must be worth at least 5 or 10 minutes of FB earnings, but they should be putting some zeros on the numbers.

Patagonia is 100% matching donations to many environmental groups, up to to $10 million until Dec 31, 2019. https://www.patagonia.com/actionworks/#!/choose-location/

‘Patagonia will match all donations made on Patagonia Action Works between Nov. 29 and Dec. 31, up to $10,000 per donation, until we’ve reached a maximum match of $10,000,000.’

Just chatted with Patagonia customer service, and they said that they haven’t hit their $10M limit yet.

PayPal is matching 10% today up to to $500,000. They started at 6:00 am PST, so not sure if there is still any money left for that initiative.

10% match, up to $600k in matching funds… kinda weak given how big these companies are, but they don’t have to do any of this, so not really complaining.

Last year I tried getting into Paypal’s match to help out a charity. But I’m pretty sure it’s used up within seconds/minutes so not overly useful for trying to help out a specific cause.

Here’s a link regarding the comment from Laura

https://www.donorschoose.org/

It appears that that they have a 50% match today. The organization appears to support schools in the US, mostly fairly small scale projects.

Personally, I’d rather not promote facebook, but this seems like the place to comment at the moment.

paypal giving covers the fees for eligible organizations through their giving fund, year round, no $7m max. Basically a directed donation, you tell them the beneficiary and donate to paypal giving fund 501(c)(3), and paypal giving fund donates to the beneficiary. At least that’s how I understand it, anyways.

In prior years, Paypal ran a matching thing too, plus they added 1% with no limit during yearend giving season. But it looks like this year there isn’t any promotion, just the regular fee-free processing.

Yea, I meant to highlight that this is regards to the no-fee part, but maybe trying to do that on no sleep wasn’t the best of ideas.

Yep, I’ve taken advantage of that in the past.
